European Social Platform eYou Launches Globally, Promising Transparency and User Control
eYou, a Bucharest-based social media platform, has officially launched to the global public after accumulating more than 50,000 registered users during its waitlist phase. The platform, now available worldwide on both iOS and Android, positions itself as a European alternative to established social networks, emphasizing real-time fact-checking integration and user-controlled content ranking.
The company’s launch comes amid growing public skepticism toward mainstream social media platforms. According to research conducted by eYou involving 370 respondents, a striking 89% reported encountering fake news or disinformation on social media, while 77% said they feel manipulated by the content appearing in their feeds. Nearly two-thirds (63%) believe social media quality is deteriorating.
The survey revealed deeper concerns about algorithmic influence, with 93% of respondents believing that current algorithms trap users in echo chambers by prioritizing content that aligns with existing beliefs. Even more concerning, 97% felt that mainstream platforms do not prioritize truth or accuracy in content distribution.
Business incentives also emerged as a significant worry, with 85% of respondents stating that existing platforms prioritize profit over user wellbeing, and 75% believing these platforms deliberately design for addictiveness. Additionally, 67% expressed concern about major platforms being governed by either American or Chinese laws, suggesting appetite for European-based alternatives.
Despite these misgivings, social media usage remains entrenched in daily life. The survey found that 27% of respondents described themselves as addicted to social media, with 13% spending more than four hours daily on these platforms. Almost half (47%) reported dedicating one to two hours per day to social media activities.
While most of eYou’s early adopters come from Romania, where both co-founders are based, the platform has shown surprising traction in the United States, which accounts for 19% of the current user base—making it eYou’s second-largest market. Sweden follows as the third most represented country, suggesting the platform’s appeal extends well beyond Eastern Europe.
French entrepreneurs Jasseem Allybokus and Grégoire Vigroux, who have called Romania home for over a decade, founded eYou with a vision for a platform that describes itself as “independent and apolitical.” The platform’s core differentiator is its approach to content moderation and recommendation systems, allowing users unprecedented control over how their algorithmic feeds operate.
“People don’t trust what they see online anymore,” said Grégoire Vigroux, co-founder of eYou. “Social media has become an essential part of how we live and understand the world, but users feel manipulated and misinformed and our research shows that people want change. Social media is entering a new generation – one that isn’t about capturing attention at all costs, but about trust, transparency and giving control back to the user.”
The launch comes at a critical moment for the social media industry, which faces intensifying regulatory scrutiny and public backlash over content moderation practices, data privacy concerns, and political discourse manipulation. eYou’s survey indicated that 59% of respondents do not believe their data is secure on current platforms, despite the fact that over 80% regularly use Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. The majority also reported using TikTok and X (formerly Twitter).
These findings suggest users continue to engage with multiple networks despite growing distrust—potentially creating an opening for newcomers like eYou that address specific pain points around transparency, content moderation, and algorithmic control.
While eYou’s survey sample was relatively modest and predominantly European-based, the results align with broader global trends indicating erosion of trust in established social media giants and growing demand for alternatives that prioritize user agency, data privacy, and content integrity.
