Nearly a decade after the 2016 U.S. presidential election sparked widespread concern about digital disinformation, the situation has grown significantly more complex. What once triggered Senate hearings, extensive research, and the popularization of the term “fake news” now seems quaint compared to today’s AI-enabled threats.

“In terms of just looking at an image or a video, it will essentially become impossible to detect if it’s fake. I think that we’re getting close to that point, if we’re not already there,” said Jeff Hancock, founding director of Stanford Social Media Lab.

The issue extends far beyond political manipulation. Advanced AI tools like OpenAI’s Sora now enable virtually anyone to create convincingly realistic videos with minimal effort. The consequences of this shifting information environment extend beyond mere factual confusion. University of Rhode Island Professor Renee Hobbs warns about the psychological impact of what experts call the “firehose” model of propaganda—an overwhelming deluge of false information that leads to “cognitive exhaustion.”

“If constant doubt and anxiety about what to trust is the norm, then actually, disengagement is a logical response,” Hobbs told NBC News. “When people stop caring about whether something’s true or not, then the danger is not just deception, but actually it’s worse than that. It’s the whole collapse of even being motivated to seek truth.”

This potential breakdown in shared reality coincides with other AI-related challenges. The rapid expansion of AI infrastructure has created significant strain on power grids, with data centers consuming enormous amounts of electricity. These demands have driven up energy costs for consumers and prompted the Department of Energy to issue rare warnings about grid capacity limitations.

Research following the 2016 election revealed that widespread misinformation enabled users to selectively consume news that confirmed their existing worldviews, regardless of factual accuracy.
