Yelp is deploying artificial intelligence technology to help users navigate its massive database of 330 million local business reviews more efficiently. The San Francisco-based company has developed a new chatbot assistant that can quickly analyze hundreds of reviews to provide personalized recommendations.
“This chatbot can really understand 500 reviews in a second whereas a consumer might say, ‘Well, I read the first five reviews, so I guess that’s good enough,'” said Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman, who co-founded the company 22 years ago.
The new feature allows users to ask specific questions, such as finding a dog-friendly coffee shop, and receive tailored recommendations alongside relevant reviews that support those suggestions. This approach addresses a common pain point for users who often feel overwhelmed by the volume of commentary available on the platform.
What distinguishes Yelp’s AI assistant from other leading chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google’s AI overviews is its emphasis on transparency. According to Craig Saldanha, Yelp’s chief product officer, their research revealed significant consumer concerns about AI-generated misinformation.
“People want AI chatbots to be transparent about where they are getting the data from, they want to see the reviews alongside the results when they’re doing local search,” Saldanha explained. “So we are trying to make sure the human connections stay front and center while AI handles all the drudgery of making those connections.”
The move comes at a critical time for Yelp, which has struggled to capitalize on the artificial intelligence boom that has propelled tech stocks over the past two years. While the Nasdaq composite index has more than doubled in value since late 2022 when OpenAI released ChatGPT, Yelp’s stock price has remained relatively stagnant.
Despite its popularity as a review platform, Yelp continues to battle against consumers’ deeply ingrained habit of using Google as their primary search engine. This dependency has proven challenging, as Yelp relies on Google for more than 70% of its web traffic in the United States.
The relationship between the two companies has been fraught with tension since their early collaboration fell apart. Initially, Google signed a two-year licensing agreement to access Yelp’s reviews. However, the partnership deteriorated when Google began summarizing information about local businesses in ways that reduced users’ need to click through to sites like Yelp – a critical issue for a company that generates most of its revenue from advertising.
These tensions escalated when Yelp accused Google of improperly using its business reviews and favoring its own services, allegations that contributed to a Federal Trade Commission investigation. Although the investigation concluded with a settlement in 2013, it required only minor changes from Google.
The complaints against Google’s business practices continued, eventually leading to a U.S. Justice Department lawsuit that resulted in a 2024 ruling that declared Google’s search engine an illegal monopoly. However, a federal judge rejected the government’s proposal to break up Google, instead ordering less severe changes – a decision influenced by the increasing consumer shift toward chatbots as information sources rather than traditional search engines.
Yelp is currently pursuing its own antitrust lawsuit against Google, scheduled for trial in May 2028. Meanwhile, the company is working to diversify its $1.5 billion annual revenue stream by licensing some of its data to OpenAI for potential use in ChatGPT.
Stoppelman remains optimistic about the new AI assistant’s potential to enhance user experience: “With this new technology, we really think you are going to be able to find that needle in a haystack and have a far more personalized experience.”
As competition in the AI space intensifies, Yelp’s strategy of combining artificial intelligence with human-generated content could help it carve out a distinctive position in the evolving digital landscape.
