Taylor Swift Unveils Behind-the-Scenes Look at Eras Tour in New Disney+ Docuseries
Taylor Swift invited a small crowd in New York to preview her new Disney+ docuseries, “The End of an Era,” on Tuesday—exactly one year and one day after concluding her record-breaking Eras Tour.
“The Eras Tour was a lifetime within my life,” Swift told attendees, including her parents Scott and Andrea, brother Austin, select press members, tour dancers, and the production team. The intimate screening briefly paused due to a security alarm triggered by a small fire elsewhere in the building.
The six-episode series, directed by Don Argott and Sheena M. Joyce, premieres Friday on Disney+, with two episodes releasing weekly through December 26. The docuseries offers unprecedented access to Swift’s tour preparation, challenges, and personal reflections.
In the opening episode, viewers see Swift in Vancouver before the tour’s final performance, delivering a passionate speech to her dancers about intentionally creating their success. She reveals two major catalysts for the Eras Tour concept: losing ownership of her back catalog, which inspired her re-recording project and a desire to “celebrate her past,” and the pandemic, which heightened global appreciation for live performances.
While the series acknowledges the massive ticket demand that overwhelmed Ticketmaster in November 2022, it doesn’t delve deeply into the controversy that prompted congressional hearings and new consumer protection legislation. Instead, it focuses on the tour’s cultural impact and personal challenges.
One of the most poignant segments addresses security concerns following two tragic incidents in summer 2024. Swift speaks candidly about coping with an alleged terrorist plot that led to the cancellation of three Vienna shows in August. “Never did I think we’d have a terrorist plot,” she says, calling the tour “a force to be reckoned with in global culture.”
The docuseries also captures Swift’s emotional response to the Southport stabbings in England, where a knife attack at a Swift-themed dance class left three young girls dead and ten injured. Cameras follow Swift as she prepares to return to the stage in London less than a week after the Vienna cancellations, revealing her struggle to balance grief with professional obligations.
“Being afraid something is going to happen to her audience,” the narrator explains, “this is a new challenge.” Though Swift’s private meeting with the Southport victims’ families isn’t shown, viewers witness her emotional aftermath as she acknowledges that “the show must go on.”
Swift’s fiancé, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, makes appearances in the series, notably in a phone call where he helps calm her pre-show anxieties. “Some people get a vitamin drip,” Swift tells him. “I get this conversation.” Their interaction provides a rare glimpse into their relationship dynamic.
The docuseries also highlights Swift’s collaborations with other artists, including Ed Sheeran and Florence Welch. In one revealing moment with Sheeran, Swift confesses to feeling “hunted” and expresses her desire to disappear somewhere private during her upcoming two-month break.
“The End of an Era” dedicates significant time to Swift’s touring team. Viewers meet longtime bassist Amos Heller and learn how Hollywood choreographer Mandy Moore joined the tour after actress Emma Stone’s recommendation. Dancer Kameron Saunders’ story receives special attention, including how his brother, NFL player Khalen Saunders (coincidentally then a teammate of Kelce on the Chiefs), funded his audition trip.
Swift herself addresses her dance journey, admitting, “It has taken me a really long time to even be fine at choreography,” and revealing she learns movements based on lyrical syllables rather than traditional eight-counts.
The series also documents Swift’s much-reported $197 million in staff bonuses, showing her personally writing letters to crew members. One particularly touching moment captures a young production assistant’s stunned reaction to his bonus.
Perhaps most surprising is the revelation that Swift built a “top-secret rehearsal facility” to prepare for “The Tortured Poets Department” portion of the show before the album’s release. Dancers learned choreography without music playing over loudspeakers to prevent leaks—demonstrating the extreme measures taken to preserve the tour’s surprises.
The docuseries promises to give fans and music industry observers alike an unprecedented look into the creation and execution of what has become the highest-grossing concert tour in history.
