Trump’s Intervention Upends Honduran Presidential Election

On the eve of Honduras’ presidential election, Donald Trump dramatically shifted the political conversation by endorsing conservative candidate Nasry “Tito” Asfura and announcing his plans to pardon former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, who is currently serving a 45-year prison sentence in the United States for drug trafficking offenses.

The unexpected intervention from the U.S. president-elect sent shockwaves through the Central American nation, which had previously been focused primarily on domestic concerns ahead of Sunday’s vote. Trump’s actions have injected a new layer of uncertainty into an already contentious electoral process.

Until Trump’s announcement, the three leading candidates—Asfura of the conservative National Party, Rixi Moncada of the governing social democrat Libre Party, and Salvador Nasralla of the Liberal Party—had been trading accusations about potential electoral manipulation, with each warning they wouldn’t recognize unfavorable preliminary results.

Trump dismissed Moncada and Nasralla in his statement, referring to the latter as a “borderline Communist.” The characterization has intensified political divisions in a country already struggling with deep polarization.

Moncada, who served as finance and defense secretary under outgoing President Xiomara Castro, quickly capitalized on Trump’s intervention during a rally where supporters were shown video loops of Hernández’s 2022 arrest. She framed Trump’s actions as evidence that Honduras’ economic elite, fearing her victory, had sought outside help.

“What happened yesterday is a new crime, and that new crime we will judge tomorrow at the ballot box,” Moncada told cheering supporters. “They won’t come back.”

Hernández remains a deeply divisive figure in Honduras. Following his presidency, he was extradited to the United States where federal prosecutors proved he had used his position to help transport tons of cocaine while protecting drug traffickers. His conviction was seen by many Hondurans as justice for years of corruption that plagued the National Party’s 12-year rule.

The pardon announcement has complicated matters for Asfura, potentially reminding voters of his party’s corruption scandals while simultaneously energizing the National Party’s base. Banners around Tegucigalpa display images of Hernández’s arrest, warning voters not to forget allegations that he had also diverted funds from social security during his presidency.

Nasralla, attempting to leverage his outsider status despite this being his fourth presidential run, distanced himself from Trump’s intervention. “I don’t answer to dark pacts, or corrupt networks or criminals who have killed our people,” he declared at a Friday night rally.

On the streets of Tegucigalpa, opinions remain divided. Adalid Ávila, a 21-year-old fruit vendor, plans to vote for Asfura, remembering his tenure as mayor when he built infrastructure to relieve the capital’s notorious traffic congestion. Ávila believes Trump’s endorsement could help Asfura’s chances, acknowledging the importance of U.S. support for Honduras.

Meanwhile, Melany Martínez, a 30-year-old nurse waiting for breakfast at a local food stand, viewed Trump’s endorsement as an “alert” to Hondurans. “I think the people’s decision must be taken here, because in the end we’re the citizens,” she said, expressing concern about Trump’s pardon of someone convicted of serious crimes.

Both citizens shared concerns about potential unrest following the election. Martínez mentioned hearing talk about possible trouble and suggestions to stock up on household essentials, highlighting the tension gripping the country.

Oliver Eraso, a law professor at the National Autonomous University of Honduras, downplayed the potential impact of Trump’s last-minute intervention, suggesting most voters had already decided their preferences. “The social and collective behavior of the electorate was already defined a week or two ago, especially when it comes to the National Party and the Liberal Party,” he observed.

As Hondurans head to the polls Sunday, they face not only a choice between competing domestic visions but also the shadow of American influence in their political process—a dynamic that has long characterized U.S.-Honduras relations but rarely so explicitly on the eve of an election.
