President Trump Announces Ambitious Dulles Airport Reconstruction Plan

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that his administration will undertake a major reconstruction of Dulles International Airport in northern Virginia, describing the current facility as “not a good airport” that requires significant improvements.

“We’re also going to rebuild Dulles airport because it’s not a good airport,” Trump said during a White House Cabinet meeting. “It should be a great airport, and it’s not a good airport at all. It’s a terrible airport.”

The president, drawing on his real estate background, criticized Dulles as “incorrectly designed,” though he praised Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen, who designed the airport’s iconic main terminal. Trump promised to transform Dulles into “something really spectacular,” stating his administration has “an amazing plan” for the facility.

This announcement follows Trump’s unannounced visit to Dulles in early November, when his motorcade made a detour to the airport. At that time, White House officials indicated the president wanted to assess potential future infrastructure projects at the facility.

During Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting, newly appointed Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy specifically mentioned the controversial “people movers” that transport travelers between concourses. These vehicles, also known as “mobile lounges,” have faced criticism, with one involved in a crash incident in November.

The Washington metropolitan area is served by three major airports, with Dulles handling significant international traffic for the capital region and neighboring Virginia and Maryland. The quality and functionality of Dulles has long been a topic of debate among Washington-area residents and frequent travelers.

However, some aviation experts expressed surprise at Trump’s announcement, noting that substantial modernization work is already underway at Dulles. Sheldon H. Jacobson, an airport security and aviation infrastructure expert whose research contributed to the development of TSA PreCheck, called the president’s comments a “head-scratcher.”

“I can think of a lot higher priorities right now,” Jacobson said, pointing to more pressing needs like updates to the nation’s aging air traffic control equipment. Trump did mention during the Cabinet meeting that his administration is also working on modernizing air traffic control systems.

Jacobson acknowledged that the airport’s continued reliance on people movers remains a “glaring weakness” but noted that “there are a lot of things actually in very good shape at Dulles right now,” including the AeroTrain system that has replaced some of the mobile lounges.

“I’m not sure what he’s thinking,” Jacobson added. “His comments are non sequitur to the reality of this airport.”

Following the president’s announcement, the Transportation Department revealed it is soliciting bids for a Dulles project that would construct “completely new terminals and concourses.” The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority issued a statement indicating it will collaborate with the Transportation Department on these efforts, building upon an existing $7 billion improvement plan already in development for Dulles.

The announcement comes as Dulles prepares to open a new 14-gate concourse next year, which will provide passengers with direct access to the AeroTrain system, eliminating the need for some of the controversial mobile lounges.

This initiative aligns with the Trump administration’s focus on infrastructure development, though questions remain about funding mechanisms, timelines, and how the new plans will integrate with ongoing modernization efforts at the airport.

As one of the nation’s busiest international gateways, changes to Dulles could have significant implications for air travel throughout the eastern United States and for Washington’s connectivity to global destinations.
