Thai-Cambodian Border Tensions Escalate Despite Peace Talks

Thailand and Cambodia engaged in significant armed conflict along their disputed border on Friday, even as representatives from both nations continued peace negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing crisis that has displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians.

Cambodia’s Defense Ministry reported that Thailand deployed F-16 fighter jets to bomb a village in the northwestern province of Banteay Meanchey, dropping approximately 40 bombs. While no immediate casualties were reported, the ministry stated that homes and infrastructure sustained significant damage in the attack.

Thai military officials confirmed the joint army-air force operation, describing it as necessary to protect Thailand’s Sa Kaeo province, which borders Banteay Meanchey and contains territory claimed by both countries.

“If Cambodia is not sincere about a ceasefire, peace will not be possible, and Thailand will have no choice but to proceed with full-scale military operations to defend its sovereignty,” said Air Marshal Jackkrit Thammavichai, a Thai air force spokesperson, emphasizing the deteriorating situation.

The renewed hostilities mark a significant breakdown of the ceasefire agreement brokered in July through the mediation efforts of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim with support from U.S. President Donald Trump. That agreement came after five days of intense fighting over long-standing territorial disputes along the border.

Both nations continue to characterize their military actions as defensive responses, with each accusing the other of violating the ceasefire terms. The conflict has extracted a heavy human toll since fighting resumed on December 7, with Thailand reporting 26 soldiers and one civilian killed in direct combat, plus 44 civilian deaths from collateral effects. Cambodia has not released official military casualty figures but reports 30 civilians killed and 90 injured.

Despite the ongoing violence, military officials from both countries were engaged in their third day of working-level discussions as part of their established General Border Committee. These talks, occurring at a checkpoint between Cambodia’s Pailin province and Thailand’s Chanthaburi province, are scheduled to conclude Saturday when defense ministers from both nations are expected to join and potentially formalize a new agreement.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul indicated on Friday that Thailand expected Cambodia to agree to a 72-hour ceasefire. If successfully implemented, Thailand would consider repatriating Cambodian prisoners of war, addressing one of Cambodia’s primary demands.

International diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis continue. While Trump claimed on social media that he had brokered a renewed ceasefire during phone calls with both prime ministers on December 12, Prime Minister Anutin denied such an agreement, and hostilities persisted. More recently, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, affirming Washington’s willingness “to facilitate discussions to ensure peace and stability” between the neighboring countries.

The human impact of the conflict extends beyond the casualty figures, with hundreds of thousands of civilians evacuated from affected areas along both sides of the border. The displacement has created significant humanitarian challenges in the region during the holiday season.

In an unusual development amid the fighting, Thai media highlighted the rescue of five malnourished wild animals—two lions, a sun bear, and two Asiatic black bears—from a casino allegedly serving as a Cambodian military stronghold captured by Thai marines on Sunday. Thai wildlife authorities sedated and transported the animals to breeding centers in Thailand, naming the lions “Merry” and “Christmas” in recognition of their holiday season rescue.

The border conflict represents the most serious breakdown in relations between these Southeast Asian neighbors in years, with territorial disputes dating back decades threatening regional stability. Analysts note that continued fighting could potentially impact trade, tourism, and diplomatic relations throughout the ASEAN region if a lasting solution cannot be reached.
