Ukrainian Officials Rebuke German Defense CEO Over Dismissive Drone Comments

Senior officials in Kyiv have sharply criticized the CEO of German defense giant Rheinmetall after he made dismissive remarks about Ukraine’s drone technology and women’s roles in the war effort, sparking widespread backlash on social media.

Armin Papperger, Chairman and CEO of Rheinmetall AG, compared Ukraine’s development of cutting-edge drone technology to playing “with Lego” and claimed the drones are being built by “Ukrainian housewives” with “3D printers in the kitchen.” He boldly declared, “This is not innovation,” in comments published Friday by The Atlantic magazine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded firmly to Papperger’s characterization. “If every Ukrainian housewife can really produce drones, then every Ukrainian housewife could also be the CEO of Rheinmetall,” Zelenskyy told reporters via WhatsApp. “I congratulate our defense-industrial complex on being at such a high level.”

The controversy comes as Ukraine has rapidly established itself as one of the world’s leading producers of battle-tested drone technology. Ukrainian-made drones have proven remarkably effective on the battlefield while remaining cost-efficient – a critical factor in the asymmetrical conflict with Russia that began with the full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Ukraine’s drone program represents a significant achievement in the country’s defense strategy. The indigenous development of these unmanned aerial vehicles has allowed Ukraine to strike targets deep within Russian territory and counter Russia’s substantial military advantage. So successful has this program been that Zelenskyy has reportedly been offering the technology to Gulf nations amid regional conflicts.

Rheinmetall, with nearly €10 billion ($11.5 billion) in sales last year, is one of Europe’s largest arms manufacturers and a key supplier of ammunition, air defense systems, and combat vehicles to Ukraine. The company has played a significant role in European efforts to support Ukraine’s defense capabilities against Russian aggression.

Following Papperger’s comments, Ukrainians launched a social media campaign under the hashtag #MadeByHousewives to condemn his remarks, which many viewed as belittling both Ukraine’s technological achievements and women’s contributions to the war effort.

Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko defended Ukrainian women’s roles in a post on X late Sunday: “Ukrainian women are indeed an essential part of Ukraine’s war effort and of Europe’s security. They have stepped with courage into many areas once seen as male-dominated, bringing energy, discipline, and determination.” She emphasized that women are accomplishing this “while raising our next generation and caring for their families under wartime pressures.”

Zelenskyy adviser Alexander Kamyshin added his perspective from regular visits to military manufacturing plants. “They are great housewives, yet they have to work hard in the military factories,” he wrote on X. “They deserve respect.”

Facing mounting criticism, Rheinmetall issued a statement Sunday attempting to mitigate the damage. “The utmost respect” for Ukrainian people fighting Russia, the company wrote on X. “Every single woman and man in Ukraine is making an immeasurable contribution. The innovative strength and the fighting spirit of the Ukrainian people are an inspiration to us.”

The controversy highlights the evolving nature of modern warfare, where technological innovation and adaptability have become as crucial as traditional military might. Ukraine’s success in developing and deploying effective drone technology with limited resources stands in contrast to the conventional arms industry represented by companies like Rheinmetall, potentially challenging established defense paradigms.

As the war continues into its third year, Ukraine’s ability to innovate and adapt remains crucial to its defense strategy against Russia’s larger military force, with women playing vital roles throughout the country’s war effort.
