Police are searching for a suspect who stole nearly $10,000 worth of collectible cards from a Manhattan store co-founded by NFL legend Tom Brady, in what appears to be a sophisticated credit card fraud scheme.

The theft occurred on the morning of October 20 at a CardVault by Tom Brady location in lower Manhattan, according to the New York Police Department. Authorities released surveillance footage this week showing the suspect wearing a Yankees cap, as they appealed to the public for assistance in identifying the individual.

According to police, the man attempted to purchase approximately $9,700 in valuable baseball and Pokemon cards but had his credit card transaction declined. Rather than leaving empty-handed, investigators say the suspect then manipulated the payment terminal, entering manual commands that allowed him to bypass the rejection without store employees noticing the deception.

After successfully circumventing the payment system, the suspect walked out of the store with the high-value collectibles. The NYPD confirmed no one was injured during the incident. As of Friday, police had not provided any updates on the investigation or announced an arrest in the case.

The targeted store, CardVault by Tom Brady, represents the seven-time Super Bowl champion quarterback’s entry into the booming sports memorabilia and collectibles market. Brady launched the venture in 2023 with co-founders Josh Luber, who previously helped create the sneaker marketplace StockX, and Vinit Bharara. The company operates physical retail locations that sell authenticated sports cards, memorabilia, and other collectibles, including the increasingly valuable Pokemon trading cards.

The theft highlights the growing value of trading cards in recent years. What was once considered primarily a hobby has transformed into a multi-billion-dollar industry, with rare cards routinely selling for hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. During the pandemic, the market saw unprecedented growth as collectors and investors poured money into alternative assets like sports memorabilia.

Baseball cards, particularly those featuring iconic players or rookie cards of current stars, have reached record prices at auctions. Similarly, Pokemon cards have experienced a remarkable resurgence in popularity and value, with rare first-edition cards commanding premium prices in the collectibles market.

This type of retail fraud presents unique challenges for specialty stores dealing in high-value items. While traditional retail security measures focus on preventing physical shoplifting, this incident demonstrates how payment terminal manipulation can be equally damaging to businesses.

The NYPD is asking anyone with information about the suspect to contact their Crime Stoppers hotline. The department typically offers rewards for information leading to arrests in such cases.

CardVault by Tom Brady has not released an official statement regarding the theft, but the incident comes at a time when retailers across New York City have reported concerns about retail theft. Industry analysts estimate that organized retail crime and sophisticated fraud schemes cost American retailers billions annually in lost merchandise.

For collectors and investors, the incident serves as a reminder of the significant financial stakes in today’s memorabilia market, where even a single transaction can involve thousands of dollars in value. As prices for rare cards continue to climb, both retailers and law enforcement face increasing challenges in protecting these valuable assets from determined thieves.
