A raccoon broke into a Virginia liquor store over the weekend, creating a scene that local animal control officers won’t soon forget.

The furry intruder managed to enter an Ashland-area Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority store during the early hours of Saturday morning. Rather than targeting high-end spirits, the raccoon went straight for the bottom shelf, where scotch and whisky were stored.

By the time an employee arrived Saturday morning, the evidence of the nocturnal rampage was unmistakable. Broken bottles littered the floor, alcohol pooled across the store, and ceiling tiles had collapsed. The culprit, apparently overcome by his indulgences, was found passed out on the bathroom floor.

Samantha Martin, the animal control officer called to the scene, responded with good humor to the unusual situation.

“I personally like raccoons,” Martin said. “They are funny little critters. He fell through one of the ceiling tiles and went on a full-blown rampage, drinking everything.”

The break-in represents a curious intersection between wildlife behavior and human commerce. Raccoons, known for their dexterous paws and problem-solving abilities, frequently venture into urban and suburban areas in search of food. Their adaptability has made them successful in human-dominated landscapes, though rarely do their foraging adventures lead to such spirited outcomes.

Martin transported the inebriated animal to the Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter, admitting she found the situation quite amusing. “Another day in the life of an animal control officer, I guess,” she remarked.

The shelter later confirmed on social media that the raccoon had fully recovered from his drinking spree. After being monitored for several hours and showing no signs of injury beyond what shelter officials jokingly described as “maybe a hangover and poor life choices,” the raccoon was released back into the wild.

“Hopefully having learned that breaking and entering is not the answer,” the agency added with a touch of humor.

This incident highlights the increasing frequency of human-wildlife interactions across Virginia and other states with expanding suburban areas. As development continues to encroach on natural habitats, wildlife specialists have noted an uptick in unusual animal encounters.

The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources typically records dozens of unusual wildlife incidents each year, though few involve alcohol. Experts emphasize that while this particular case ended harmlessly, wild animals should generally be given space and reported to professional handlers when they appear in distress or in unusual locations.

For the Virginia ABC store, the incident likely resulted in inventory losses and cleanup costs, though the state-run liquor authority has not released an estimate of damages. Virginia’s ABC stores generate over $1 billion in revenue annually for the commonwealth, with proceeds supporting various state programs.

The raccoon’s adventure, while disruptive to business, provided a moment of levity for local officials and social media audiences. Wildlife encounters in retail settings occasionally make headlines across the country, though most involve less destruction and rarely feature animals sampling the merchandise.

Local residents have responded to the news with amusement, with some suggesting tongue-in-cheek that the store might consider improving its security measures – particularly against woodland creatures with a taste for fine spirits.

As for the raccoon, having slept off his adventure and returned to the wild, he has unwittingly joined the ranks of viral animal stories that periodically capture public attention and remind us of the unpredictable nature of wildlife.
