MacKenzie Scott Donates Unprecedented $7.1 Billion to Nonprofits in 2025
MacKenzie Scott has dramatically increased her philanthropic giving, donating $7.1 billion to nonprofits in 2025, more than doubling her contributions from recent years. The author and philanthropist revealed this staggering figure in an essay published Tuesday on her website.
“This dollar total will likely be reported in the news, but any dollar amount is a vanishingly tiny fraction of the personal expressions of care being shared into communities this year,” Scott wrote, downplaying the financial aspect of her giving.
The latest round of donations builds upon her already substantial philanthropic record, following $2.6 billion in gifts in 2024 and $2.1 billion in 2023. Since 2019, Scott’s total charitable giving has now reached $26.3 billion, cementing her position as one of the world’s most influential philanthropists.
Scott’s approach to giving has revolutionized the philanthropic landscape. Unlike traditional foundations that require detailed applications and impose strict conditions on how funds must be used, Scott provides unrestricted grants with no reporting requirements. Recipients are typically notified through intermediaries, often with little warning before receiving transformative amounts of money.
Forbes estimates Scott’s net worth at approximately $33 billion, primarily derived from Amazon shares she received following her 2019 divorce from company founder Jeff Bezos.
Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have emerged as significant beneficiaries in this latest round of giving. According to research by Marybeth Gasman, a professor at Rutgers University and expert on HBCUs, these institutions have received $783 million from Scott so far this year.
“One of the things that I really admire about Mackenzie Scott is that she is like an equity machine,” Gasman said, noting the particularly meaningful timing of these donations as equity initiatives in education face political headwinds. The professor also observed that Scott’s current gifts to HBCUs surpass those from her 2020 giving round.
Since 2020, Scott has directed approximately $1.35 billion to HBCUs, though not all previous recipients received funding in this cycle, and some institutions received their first-ever gift from the philanthropist.
The United Negro College Fund (UNCF), which provides scholarships to minority students, received $70 million from Scott. The organization plans to invest the gift in a collective endowment for participating HBCUs. Additionally, Native Forward Scholars Fund, which supports Native American students pursuing higher education, received $50 million, adding to a previous donation from Scott.
A 2023 study by the Center for Effective Philanthropy found that contrary to potential concerns, most recipients have successfully managed Scott’s substantial funds, and other funders have not reduced their support as a result.
Kim Mazzuca, CEO of California-based nonprofit 10,000 Degrees, described her shock upon learning of a $42 million gift from Scott earlier this year—approximately double the organization’s annual budget. The nonprofit, which provides scholarships and mentoring to low-income students, plans to use the funds to expand its reach, test new technology tools, and establish an endowment.
“She comes from a very deep, reflective space, very heartfelt,” Mazzuca said of Scott. “And she’s only providing these financial means as a tool for people to recognize they are who they’ve been waiting for.”
That reference echoes a Hopi Tribe prophecy that Scott cited in an October essay on her website titled “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.” In the essay, later expanded in December, Scott reflected on how acts of generosity create far-reaching ripple effects, sharing personal stories of receiving help during her college years—including a dentist who repaired a tooth for free and a roommate who loaned her $1,000.
Scott has since invested in that same former roommate’s company, which provides loans to students who struggle to secure traditional bank financing. This investment aligns with Scott’s announced strategy to direct more of her wealth toward “mission aligned” investments rather than vehicles focused solely on financial returns.
In her 2025 essay, Scott offered a subtle call to action, writing, “There are many ways to influence how we move through the world, and where we land.”
The unprecedented scale and unconditional nature of Scott’s giving continue to transform the nonprofit world, providing organizations with rare opportunities for substantial, unrestricted growth and innovation.
