A passenger aircraft operated by Starsky Aviation was forced to make an emergency landing at Mogadishu’s Aden Abdulle International Airport on Tuesday, overshooting the runway and coming to rest in shallow water on a nearby beach after experiencing technical difficulties shortly after takeoff.

All 55 people aboard the flight—50 passengers and 5 crew members—were safely evacuated with no injuries reported, according to Starsky Aviation CEO Ahmed Nur, who confirmed the incident in a statement.

“The aircraft overran on the runway before coming to a rest on the shore of the Indian Ocean near the airport,” Nur said. “No injuries, no deaths.”

The aircraft was destined for Gaalkacyo, a city in north-central Somalia, when it developed technical problems approximately 15 minutes after departing from Mogadishu. Ahmed Moalim, director of Somalia’s Civil Aviation Authority, told local media that during the attempted emergency return to Mogadishu, the plane veered off the runway and ended up at the shoreline.

Somalia’s Transportation Minister Mohamed Farah Nuh confirmed that emergency response teams successfully accounted for everyone aboard the flight. He noted that while the aircraft sustained damage, no passengers or crew members were harmed. Nuh added that authorities will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the incident.

This emergency landing comes amid Somalia’s ongoing efforts to rebuild its aviation infrastructure after decades of civil war and instability. The country’s main international airport in Mogadishu has seen significant upgrades in recent years as part of broader efforts to improve transportation links and boost economic development.

Aviation safety in the Horn of Africa region has been a persistent concern for international regulators. Somalia’s aviation sector has faced particular challenges with limited resources for maintenance and safety oversight. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has been working with Somali authorities to strengthen regulatory frameworks and improve operational safety standards.

Starsky Aviation is one of several domestic carriers operating in Somalia’s growing aviation market. The company, like other regional operators, provides crucial transportation links in a country where road infrastructure remains limited and security concerns often make air travel the preferred option for many passengers.

Tuesday’s incident underscores the safety challenges that continue to face aviation in developing markets. While the outcome was fortunate with no casualties reported, it highlights the importance of robust emergency response protocols and thorough maintenance procedures.

Local fishermen and beachgoers reportedly witnessed the dramatic landing, with some assisting in the initial evacuation efforts before official rescue teams arrived at the scene.

The aircraft type has not been specified in initial reports, though most regional carriers in East Africa operate small to medium-sized commercial aircraft suited for domestic routes.

Authorities have not yet disclosed specific details about the technical problem that prompted the emergency landing. Such investigations typically involve examining flight data recorders, maintenance records, and interviewing flight crew members to determine whether mechanical failure, weather conditions, or other factors contributed to the incident.

As the investigation proceeds, Somalia’s civil aviation authorities will likely review emergency procedures at Aden Abdulle International Airport to ensure they remain adequate for handling similar incidents in the future.
