A woman traveling on a Delta Air Lines flight unexpectedly gave birth to a healthy baby girl just before the aircraft landed at Portland International Airport on Friday night, transforming a routine Boeing 737 journey into a remarkable mid-air medical event.

Ashley Blair, a Tennessee resident, was flying to Oregon to be with her mother for her scheduled delivery when she went into labor approximately 30 minutes before the plane was due to land. Her daughter, Brielle Renee Blair, arrived about two weeks ahead of her expected due date, weighing 5 1/2 pounds (2.5 kg).

The dramatic delivery was facilitated by two paramedics who happened to be on board the Atlanta to Portland flight. Tina Fritz and Kaarin Powell were returning home after vacationing in the Dominican Republic when a flight attendant asked them to assist Blair after they had been helping with another passenger’s medical needs.

“We found her in labor with contractions getting closer together,” Fritz told The Associated Press. The paramedics quickly realized they needed to create space for the imminent delivery on the fully booked flight carrying 153 passengers.

With the plane minutes from landing, the makeshift medical team had to improvise with limited resources. The aircraft lacked an obstetrical kit, and the paramedics collected blankets from fellow passengers. A flight attendant provided a shoelace to tie off the umbilical cord, while Powell even removed one of her own shoelaces to use as a tourniquet for starting an IV line.

As the delivery progressed rapidly, flight attendants instructed the paramedics to take their seats for landing, but they insisted on continuing with the delivery. “We’re like, ‘No! No!'” Fritz recalled.

Blair delivered her daughter after three strong pushes, with the baby arriving moments before touchdown. Powell cut the umbilical cord and held the newborn as the plane landed.

“Baby pinked up right away,” Fritz said, describing the successful delivery. “She was gorgeous. Mom was a rock star.”

After the plane taxied to the gate, the new mother was reunited with her daughter amid a celebratory atmosphere as passengers and crew took photos of the extraordinary event. Portland Airport Fire & Rescue personnel met the flight and transported mother and baby to a local hospital for observation.

“We found the mother and baby healthy,” confirmed Port of Portland spokesperson Molly Prescott in an email statement to The Associated Press.

Delta Air Lines issued a statement thanking “the crew and medical volunteers on board who stepped in to provide care,” though there was a discrepancy in their account. The airline mentioned assistance from a doctor and two nurses, but Fritz clarified that no doctor was present, and the only nurse on board remained with another passenger who had required medical attention earlier in the flight.

The incident highlights the rare but not unprecedented phenomenon of in-flight births. Commercial airlines typically have guidelines regarding air travel during pregnancy, with many carriers requiring medical clearance for women beyond their 36th week of pregnancy or restricting travel entirely in late pregnancy. However, babies occasionally arrive unexpectedly, as in this case.

For the paramedics involved, the experience created a lasting bond with Blair and her newborn. “I feel like we’re friends now forever,” Fritz said, noting that she has maintained contact with the new mother, who has been somewhat overwhelmed by the attention the birth has received.

The successful delivery under challenging circumstances showcases the importance of having trained medical professionals on board during emergencies and the ability of airline crews to adapt to unexpected situations. For little Brielle Renee Blair, it also means having a unique birth story that began at 30,000 feet over the Pacific Northwest.
