OpenAI CEO Sounds Alarm on ChatGPT Improvements as Competition Intensifies

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has issued an urgent “code red” directive to employees, calling for immediate improvements to the company’s flagship product ChatGPT while postponing several planned initiatives. According to The Wall Street Journal, Altman’s internal memo sent Monday emphasized the need to enhance the artificial intelligence chatbot’s speed, reliability, and personalization features.

The directive comes as ChatGPT marks its third anniversary this week. Since its initial release, the AI tool has sparked global interest and fueled a commercial surge in generative AI technology, positioning the San Francisco-based startup as an early market leader. However, the company now faces mounting pressure from competitors, most notably Google, which recently released Gemini 3, the latest version of its own AI assistant.

Despite boasting over 800 million weekly users, as Altman reported this fall, OpenAI still operates without turning a profit. The company, valued at a staggering $500 billion, has committed more than $1 trillion in financial obligations to cloud computing providers and chipmakers that power its sophisticated AI systems.

These substantial financial commitments have raised concerns among investors about whether OpenAI can generate sufficient revenue to meet expectations from financial backers like Oracle and Nvidia. The situation has intensified worries about a potential AI bubble in the investment community.

Nick Turley, OpenAI’s vice president and head of ChatGPT, highlighted on social media Monday that online search represents one of the product’s most significant growth opportunities. He indicated the company is focusing on making ChatGPT more capable while developing a more intuitive and personalized user experience.

Revenue generation remains a challenge for OpenAI. While the company offers premium ChatGPT subscriptions, most users access the free version. In October, OpenAI introduced Atlas, its own web browser, in an apparent move to compete with Google Chrome as more internet users turn to AI for answering questions. Unlike Google, however, OpenAI has not yet attempted to monetize ChatGPT through advertising, which forms the foundation of Google’s lucrative search business.

According to the Journal, Altman’s memo indicated that several initiatives would be delayed, including work on advertising features, AI agents for health and shopping applications, and a personal assistant project called Pulse. These postponements suggest a strategic shift to concentrate resources on enhancing the core ChatGPT product.

The reprioritization comes at a critical juncture for the AI industry, which has seen explosive growth but also increased scrutiny regarding sustainable business models. OpenAI’s decision to focus on improving its flagship product rather than expanding into new territories indicates recognition of the intensifying competitive landscape.

Industry analysts suggest that as the AI market matures, users are becoming more discriminating about performance, reliability, and customization options. This shift in consumer expectations places additional pressure on companies like OpenAI to continuously refine their offerings rather than simply expanding feature sets.

The company’s focus on search capabilities could potentially position ChatGPT as a more direct competitor to Google’s core business, representing a significant strategic pivot. However, developing a sophisticated search engine capable of challenging Google’s dominance would require substantial resources and technological innovation.

OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Altman’s memo or the company’s revised strategic direction.

The developments at OpenAI reflect broader trends in the AI industry, where early excitement about technological capabilities is gradually giving way to harder questions about business viability, revenue generation, and sustainable growth models. As the competition in generative AI intensifies, the pressure to deliver both technological innovation and financial returns will likely continue to shape company strategies across the sector.
