Police Fatally Shoot Woman Who Kidnapped and Injured Child at Omaha Walmart

Omaha police shot and killed a woman outside a Walmart on Tuesday after she kidnapped a 3-year-old boy at knifepoint and slashed him across the face, according to authorities.

Deputy Chief Scott Gray said the incident began when the suspect approached a female shopper and a young boy inside the store. After shoplifting a large knife from within Walmart, the woman displayed the weapon and took control of the child, effectively kidnapping him from his caretaker.

“She took possession of the child, essentially kidnapping the child,” Gray told reporters at the scene.

The suspect then forced the other woman to walk in front of a shopping cart while she followed behind with the child still at knifepoint. The tense situation continued as they proceeded out of the store and down a driveway, where the two women engaged in what Gray described as “some verbal back and forth” for several minutes until officers responded to a 911 call.

When police arrived outside the Walmart, they immediately issued commands to the suspect. Instead of complying, the woman began “swiping the knife at the child, cutting him across the face,” according to Gray. At least one officer then fired at the woman, who died at the scene.

Body-worn camera footage released by the police department shows the critical moment when the woman raised a knife over the young boy, who was sitting in a shopping cart, as an officer aimed a firearm at her.

The child was transported to a local hospital where he is being treated for a significant laceration across the left side of his face and an injury to his hand. Medical professionals expect him to recover from these injuries.

Investigators are still trying to determine what motivated the attack. Gray emphasized that the two women were strangers to each other, with no prior connection or interaction. The specific relationship between the boy and the woman accompanying him was not immediately clarified by authorities.

“They kind of just purposely but casually walk out of the store, so I don’t think anybody was actually looking at them as being a suspect of anything,” Gray noted, explaining why the situation didn’t initially draw attention from other shoppers.

Police are now conducting a comprehensive review of store surveillance video to piece together the complete sequence of events. Gray assured the public that this appears to be an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to the community.

The Walmart remained largely empty during the investigation as police secured the scene and gathered evidence. In accordance with standard procedure for officer-involved shootings, the Omaha Police Department is leading the investigation with assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol and the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office.

This incident adds to growing concerns about public safety in retail environments nationwide. Major retailers like Walmart have been increasing security measures in recent years to address both shoplifting and violent incidents. According to the National Retail Federation, retailers are spending increasingly higher amounts on loss prevention and security personnel to address these concerns.

While details about the suspect have not yet been released, authorities continue to investigate potential motives and will likely provide additional information as the investigation progresses. The officer who discharged their weapon will likely be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, following standard protocol for officer-involved shootings.
