Former MrBeast Employee Files Lawsuit Alleging Workplace Discrimination After Maternity Leave
A former social media manager at Beast Industries, the company behind YouTube star MrBeast, has filed a lawsuit claiming she was wrongfully terminated after returning from maternity leave, highlighting alleged patterns of gender bias and sexual harassment at the rapidly expanding media empire.
Lorrayne Mavromatis filed the federal lawsuit in North Carolina on Wednesday against MrBeastYouTube, LLC and GameChanger 24/7, LLC, claiming violations of the Family and Medical Leave Act, which provides job protection for qualifying medical reasons including childbirth. She also lodged a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleging sex and pregnancy discrimination, as well as retaliation.
According to court documents, Mavromatis claims she worked continuously after giving birth, including during her time in the delivery room. “I was still bleeding, and I just had to show up,” Mavromatis told The Associated Press. Less than three weeks after returning to full-time work, she says she was terminated.
Beast Industries has vigorously denied the allegations, dismissing the lawsuit as a “clout-chasing complaint” based on “deliberate misrepresentations and categorically false statements.” The company maintains that Mavromatis’s position was eliminated during a reorganization by a new head of e-commerce.
The company provided evidence of a March 2025 Slack exchange showing a coworker telling Mavromatis she “shouldn’t even be checking” messages after she mentioned being in labor. Beast Industries also shared documentation of Mavromatis’s signature confirming receipt of the employee handbook containing FMLA policies.
“We will not submit to opportunistic lawyers looking to manufacture a payday from us,” the company stated in its response.
The lawsuit comes at a critical juncture for Beast Industries, which has been working to rehabilitate its workplace culture amid expansion efforts. Founded by Jimmy Donaldson, better known as MrBeast, the company has ventured beyond YouTube into television with “Beast Games” on Amazon Prime and financial services through its acquisition of the teen banking app Step.
This isn’t the first time Beast Industries has faced scrutiny over workplace conduct. Two years ago, the company weathered a social media controversy regarding Donaldson’s past racist and homophobic language, alongside allegations that a longtime collaborator shared inappropriate messages with minors. These incidents prompted Donaldson to address company culture in an August 2024 email to staff, acknowledging his responsibility to “create a culture that makes all our employees feel safe.”
Following a third-party investigation, Beast Industries terminated several employees after identifying instances of workplace harassment and misconduct.
Meanwhile, Donaldson’s mainstream profile continues to rise. He recently appeared at the MTV Video Music Awards, starred in a Super Bowl commercial for Salesforce, and joined the cast of “Angry Birds Movie 3.” The company now employs approximately 700 people, according to chief communications officer Gaude Paez, and has been recruiting executives from major corporations like NBCUniversal and TikTok.
The lawsuit’s timing is notable, coming just before Donaldson was scheduled to be honored at the TIME100 celebration in New York alongside figures like Pope Leo XIV, President Donald Trump, and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Mavromatis’s complaint describes an intense workplace culture, referencing a 36-page internal guide titled “HOW TO SUCCEED IN MRBEAST PRODUCTION” that included sections stating “It’s okay for the boys to be childish” and “The Amount of hours you work is irrelevant.” This environment, she claims, led her to join a team meeting from her hospital bed during labor for fear of losing her job.
“I actually had to hold my breath in between talks because of how hard the contractions were,” she recounted.
Hired in August 2022 as MrBeast’s head of Instagram, Mavromatis received two promotions within a year. Between June 2023 and January 2024, she oversaw the company’s verticals division in what she describes as an executive role, though Beast Industries characterizes it as mid-level.
The lawsuit also alleges uncomfortable workplace interactions, including an incident where then-CEO James Warren, Donaldson’s cousin, allegedly made inappropriate comments suggesting Donaldson was attracted to her. The company has attributed Donaldson’s bathroom trips mentioned in the exchange to his Crohn’s disease.
Mavromatis claims that after reporting sexual harassment and a hostile work environment to human resources—which was led by Donaldson’s mother—she was transferred to “an obscure role,” which the company denies as “false and inaccurate.”
The TIME’S UP Legal Defense Fund at the National Women’s Law Center has announced its support for Mavromatis’s case, with senior director Jennifer Mondino noting, “Abusive workplaces rely on a persistent lack of accountability. We see this pattern frequently, where those with influence and power are allowed to harm others and retaliate against those who decide to speak up.”
