Mercedes F1 Team Welcomes CrowdStrike CEO as New Co-Owner
Mercedes Formula 1 team has announced a significant ownership change, with CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz acquiring a 15% stake in the championship-winning racing outfit. The deal, revealed ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, values the team at approximately $6 billion.
Kurtz’s investment comes directly from team principal Toto Wolff’s shareholding. Prior to this transaction, ownership was evenly divided between Wolff, Mercedes-Benz, and INEOS, each holding a third of the team. With the new arrangement, Wolff reduces his stake while maintaining his positions as team principal and CEO.
As part of the agreement, Kurtz will join the team’s strategic steering committee alongside Wolff, Mercedes-Benz chairman Ola Kallenius, and INEOS founder Sir Jim Ratcliffe. He will also serve as a technology advisor to the team, bringing his extensive cybersecurity expertise to the increasingly tech-driven sport.
“George’s background is unusual in its breadth — he’s a racer, a loyal sporting ambassador for Mercedes-AMG, and an exceptional entrepreneur,” Wolff said in a statement. “He understands both the demands of racing and the realities of building and scaling technology businesses. That combination brings specific insight that is increasingly relevant to the future of Formula 1.”
The connection between Kurtz and Mercedes isn’t entirely new. CrowdStrike, the cybersecurity firm Kurtz founded, has been a global partner of the Mercedes F1 team since 2019. However, this investment represents a personal stake for Kurtz rather than a corporate one.
Kurtz himself is no stranger to motorsport. Since 2016, he has competed in sports car racing with considerable success. His achievements include class wins at prestigious events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans LMP2 Pro-Am, Twelve Hours of Sebring, Petit Le Mans, and the Six Hours of the Glen. He’s also a two-time winner of both the Indianapolis 8 Hour and 24 Hours of Spa, competing in a Mercedes-AMG GT3.
His racing credentials extend to championship titles as well. Kurtz won the 2023 SRO GT World Challenge America Team & Drivers’ Championship, the 2023 Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing Championship Driver Category, and the 2023-24 Asia Le Mans LMP2 Championship.
“Winning in racing and cybersecurity requires speed, precision, and innovation. Milliseconds matter. Execution counts. Data wins,” Kurtz said. “Technology is reshaping competitive advantage and human capability everywhere, including motorsport. I’m excited to help the team securely accelerate forward.”
The timing of the announcement coincides with Formula 1’s Las Vegas Grand Prix, where Mercedes driver George Russell enters as the defending race winner. The high-profile race through the streets of Las Vegas serves as a fitting backdrop for such a major business development.
The deal reflects the growing intersection of technology and motorsport. Formula 1 has increasingly become a data-driven sport, with teams collecting and analyzing millions of data points during each race weekend to optimize performance. Cybersecurity has also become crucial as teams seek to protect their intellectual property and technical innovations from competitors.
For Mercedes, which dominated Formula 1 from 2014 to 2021 with seven consecutive drivers’ and constructors’ championships, this new partnership comes as the team works to reclaim its position at the top of the sport. After struggling with performance issues following major regulation changes in 2022, the team has shown signs of resurgence, including Russell’s victory at the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix last year.
The investment also highlights Formula 1’s continued commercial appeal. Under Liberty Media’s ownership since 2017, the sport has expanded its global footprint, particularly in the United States, where races in Miami, Austin, and Las Vegas have attracted significant attention and investment from American companies and entrepreneurs.
