Lawsuit filed over 2 deaths in January air ambulance crash in Philadelphia

The families of two victims killed in a January air ambulance crash in Philadelphia have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the medical transport company and other parties allegedly responsible for the tragedy that claimed eight lives.

Filed on Monday, the lawsuit represents the estates of Dr. Raul Meza Arredondo, a pediatrician, and Lizeth Murillo Osuna, mother of a child who was returning to Mexico after receiving medical treatment at a Philadelphia hospital. Both victims were Mexican citizens, with Arredondo residing in Atizapan de Zaragoza and Osuna in Ensenada.

The January 31 crash of the Learjet 55 killed all six people aboard the aircraft and two individuals on the ground. More than 20 others sustained injuries when the plane slammed into Philadelphia’s Rhawnhurst neighborhood shortly after takeoff from Northeast Philadelphia Airport.

According to the lawsuit, approximately one minute after becoming airborne, the Tijuana-bound medical transport “erupted in a massive explosion that engulfed multiple vehicles and houses and sent fiery debris raining down on terrified and helpless bystanders.” The crash occurred near Roosevelt Mall, an outdoor shopping center in the densely populated northeast Philadelphia area.

The National Transportation Safety Board’s ongoing investigation has revealed that the aircraft’s voice recorder was not operational during the flight. Investigators also noted that the crew did not issue any distress calls to air traffic control before the catastrophic crash, complicating efforts to determine the cause.

Named as defendants in the lawsuit are Med Jets, S.A. de C.V., the Guadalajara-based air ambulance company operating as Jet Rescue, along with unspecified parties responsible for the aircraft’s design, manufacture, maintenance, and inspection. The plaintiffs allege these entities negligently caused the deaths of their family members.

The case highlights the growing scrutiny of the medical air transport industry, which operates under unique pressures to transport critically ill patients while maintaining rigorous safety standards. Air ambulances typically operate with specialized medical equipment and staff to provide care during transport, adding complexity to flight operations.

Medical repatriation flights between the United States and Mexico have increased in recent years as more Mexican citizens seek specialized treatment in American hospitals before returning home. These cross-border medical transport operations involve navigating different regulatory frameworks and safety standards.

The Philadelphia crash stands as one of the deadliest air ambulance incidents in recent U.S. history. The industry has faced previous criticism regarding safety practices, with the National Transportation Safety Board conducting several investigations into medical flight crashes over the past decade.

For the Rhawnhurst neighborhood, the January crash brought devastation to a residential area not accustomed to aviation disasters. The community continues to recover from both physical damage to properties and the emotional trauma experienced by witnesses and those who lost loved ones.

Attempts to reach Jet Rescue for comment on Monday were unsuccessful. Messages left for the company’s spokesman and for attorneys representing Med Jets in a related federal lawsuit went unanswered. A Jet Rescue Air Ambulance facility in Florida also did not respond to inquiries.

As litigation proceeds, investigators continue working to determine what caused the Learjet to crash shortly after takeoff. The absence of voice recorder data presents a significant challenge to understanding the final moments of the flight and the circumstances that led to the tragic outcome.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages for the victims’ families, who continue to grapple with the sudden loss of their loved ones in an incident that shocked both Philadelphia residents and the international medical transport community.
