Amazon Founder Awards $5 Million to Neurodivergent Student Support Network

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife, former news anchor Lauren Sánchez Bezos, have awarded $5 million to David Flink, founder of the Neurodiversity Alliance, as part of their Courage & Civility Award program.

“I feel like there’s a narrative sometimes that our little actions don’t matter,” said Flink, who serves as CEO of the organization. “That’s just not true. And this proves it. Lots of little actions that happen every day in our work, collectively over time, reached the ears of folks like Lauren and Jeff.”

The Neurodiversity Alliance, which began over 25 years ago as a peer-to-peer mentorship program, supports students with various learning and developmental differences including autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. The nonprofit has expanded its reach to more than 600 high schools and colleges across the United States, fostering educational environments that better accommodate students whose brains function differently from what is typically expected.

This year’s award represents a shift in the Bezoses’ philanthropic strategy. While previous recipients included high-profile figures like CNN commentator Van Jones, chef José Andrés, actress Eva Longoria, and country music icon Dolly Parton, this year’s selection focuses on getting resources closer to grassroots efforts. Five winners are splitting a $25 million pot, with each receiving $5 million—a departure from past awards that totaled up to $100 million.

The Bezoses, who married this summer in an elaborate Venice ceremony that drew criticism from wealth inequality activists, did not provide specific reasoning for supporting this particular cause. With a net worth of approximately $240 billion according to Forbes, Jeff Bezos ranks as the fourth richest person in the world.

However, Lauren Sánchez Bezos has personal connections to the issue, having grown up with undiagnosed dyslexia. In a “Good Morning America” interview last year, she shared that her children’s book, “The Fly Who Flew to Space,” was written for “the 8-year-old me who was told I wasn’t smart.” She credited a college professor who encouraged her to get tested after recruiting her to work on the school newspaper despite her spelling difficulties.

Leslie Lenkowsky, professor emeritus in public affairs and philanthropic studies at Indiana University, noted that the Bezoses’ approach differs from many of their ultra-wealthy peers. “Rather than trying to change the system, what they’re trying to do is provide funding to individuals or communities to deal with important issues,” Lenkowsky said. “It really is a much older model of philanthropy.”

Flink plans to use the funds to accelerate the alliance’s growth, aiming to expand to more than 2,000 sites by 2028. The money will support the development of mentorship programs, challenge negative narratives about neurodiversity, and expand training for student leaders who sustain their schools’ clubs.

The timing of this support is particularly significant given recent changes in federal education policy. The Trump administration’s restructuring of the Education Department has included substantial layoffs at the Office for Civil Rights, which handles complaints that students with disabilities are not receiving adequate support from their schools. Though the department recently rehired dozens of staffers to address a growing backlog of discrimination complaints, advocates remain concerned.

Kala Shah, an attorney who spent 24 years at the Department of Education enforcing protections for students with disabilities, emphasized the importance of private support in the current climate: “This is an especially critical time for private foundations and philanthropy to help fill the gap in resources that’s been created by the current federal climate.”

The Bezos Courage & Civility Award, established in 2021, celebrates individuals who break barriers and unite people behind solutions to often neglected challenges. Recipients receive no-strings-attached funding they can use however they choose to pursue their charitable goals.

Bezos has previously demonstrated interest in education through his network of tuition-free preschools inspired by the Montessori model, but this latest gift signals support for inclusive learning environments across all education levels.
