Craftsmanship Behind the Coveted BAFTA Mask: A Labor of Bronze and Dedication
Winners at the upcoming British Academy Film Awards will leave the ceremony with more than just honor and prestige – they’ll depart with a gleaming bronze mask trophy that represents both artistic achievement and fine craftsmanship.
The February 22 ceremony at London’s Royal Festival Hall will see filmmakers and actors from productions like “One Battle After Another,” “Sinners,” “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme,” and “Sentimental Value” vying for these prestigious awards. Each winner will need some strength to hoist their prize – the iconic masks weigh in at a substantial 3 kilograms (6.6 pounds).
Despite their golden appearance, the BAFTA trophies are actually crafted from phosphor bronze, a material known for its durability and rich color. Each mask is meticulously polished to a mirror finish, designed to reflect the joyful expressions of those who earn them.
The creation of these iconic trophies takes place at the AATi Foundry in Braintree, approximately 50 miles northeast of London. This specialized workshop produces around 350 bronze masks annually to cover all BAFTA ceremonies across film, television, and gaming industries.
“Each mask represents approximately a week’s worth of work from start to finish,” explained Hugh Bisset, director of the foundry, during a recent interview. The masks are produced in batches through a time-honored technique called sandcasting.
The manufacturing process begins in the tooling department, where craftsmen create a pattern using either traditional timber or modern 3D printing techniques. This pattern then moves to the molding team, who use sand to create two recessed impressions of the mask – one for each side.
Once these sand molds are closed together, the real magic begins. Molten bronze heated to temperatures reaching 1,200 degrees Celsius (2,192 Fahrenheit) is carefully poured into the mold. The metal then requires three to four hours to cool completely before it can be removed from the sand.
At this stage, the masks appear dull with rough edges – far from the gleaming trophies seen on awards night. They undergo a meticulous refinement process that includes fettling (removing excess material), threading (for assembly purposes), and extensive polishing to achieve their characteristic shine.
Quality control is paramount in the final stage. “The thing I’m always conscious of is that these amazing actors and actresses, they pick up their awards and my big concern is that a smudge of polish will end up over their lovely, beautiful white dress,” Bisset noted, highlighting the attention to detail that goes into each trophy.
The foundry’s commitment to excellence mirrors the dedication shown by the filmmakers and performers who receive these awards. The BAFTA mask has become one of the most recognizable symbols in the entertainment industry, alongside the American Oscar statuette and the Golden Globe.
This year’s ceremony will likely feature many familiar faces from the awards circuit. Industry insiders are watching closely to see if favorites like Jessie Buckley, Timothée Chalamet, and Teyana Taylor will claim one of these weighty honors.
The BAFTA trophy stands as both a technical achievement and artistic symbol. As Bisset puts it, while “there’s a lot of metal in it,” each mask also contains “a lot of time and love being put into it.” This combination of materials and craftsmanship makes these trophies priceless to their recipients, regardless of the actual bronze value.
The British Academy Film Awards have been recognizing excellence in filmmaking since 1947, establishing themselves as one of the most prestigious ceremonies in the global film calendar. The distinctive mask design, based on the theatrical symbol of comedy and tragedy, has become an instantly recognizable icon of cinematic achievement.
As the entertainment world turns its attention to London for the upcoming ceremony, these meticulously crafted bronze masks stand ready to acknowledge another year of exceptional filmmaking talent.

Haha, good point. Maybe they should start a BAFTA weight-lifting program to prepare nominees!
