Honda has issued a nationwide recall of more than 256,600 Accord Hybrid vehicles due to a software error that could cause drivers to suddenly lose power while on the road, the company announced Tuesday.

The recall encompasses Accord Hybrid models from 2023 through 2025 model years, according to documentation published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The problem stems from a faulty software issue that may trigger a reset of the vehicle’s internal systems while in operation, significantly increasing the risk of accidents and injuries.

In its official statement, American Honda attributed the defect to “improper software programming by a supplier.” The error specifically impacts the vehicles’ integrated control module central processing unit, a critical component that manages the hybrid powertrain system.

Honda first received reports about the issue in March 2024 and has spent several months investigating the problem’s scope and severity. According to NHTSA documents, the automaker has already received 832 warranty claims related to this defect. Despite the substantial number of affected vehicles, Honda estimates only about 0.3% of the recalled cars—approximately 770 vehicles—actually contain the faulty software.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in connection with this defect between mid-December 2022 and the end of October 2024, according to company records.

This recall represents another challenge for Honda as automakers increasingly transition toward electrified vehicles. The Accord Hybrid has been one of Honda’s flagship electrified offerings in the competitive mid-size sedan market, where manufacturers are racing to deliver reliable hybrid technology to meet growing consumer demand for fuel-efficient options.

Industry analysts note that software-related recalls have become more common as vehicles increasingly rely on complex computer systems to manage everything from entertainment features to critical safety and powertrain functions. The trend highlights the growing pains automakers face as they navigate the intersection of traditional automotive engineering and advanced software development.

To remedy the issue, Honda dealers will update the affected vehicles’ software at no cost to owners. While official notification letters are scheduled to be mailed to registered owners beginning January 5, 2025, a Honda spokesperson confirmed that the corrected software is already available at dealerships nationwide.

Vehicle owners concerned about whether their Accord Hybrid is affected can check using the NHTSA’s online recall tool by entering their vehicle identification number (VIN). Alternatively, owners can use Honda’s own recall lookup service on the company’s website to determine if their vehicle requires service.

Affected customers can also contact Honda’s customer service directly at 1-888-234-2138 for more information about the recall process and scheduling their free repair.

The NHTSA continues to monitor the situation as part of its ongoing vehicle safety oversight mission. The agency encourages all vehicle owners to promptly respond to recall notices to ensure their vehicles meet federal safety standards.

This recall underscores the complex nature of modern vehicle systems and the critical importance of thorough software testing before vehicles reach consumers, particularly as the automotive industry accelerates its shift toward more technologically sophisticated hybrid and electric vehicles.
