OpenAI CEO Apologizes for Failing to Alert Authorities Before Tumbler Ridge Mass Shooting
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has issued a formal apology for his company’s failure to alert law enforcement about concerning online behavior from an individual who later carried out a mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia that claimed eight lives.
In a letter dated Thursday and shared on B.C. Premier David Eby’s social media accounts and local news outlet Tumbler RidgeLines, Altman expressed deep remorse for the company’s inaction.
“I am deeply sorry that we did not alert law enforcement to the account that was banned in June,” Altman wrote. “While I know words can never be enough, I believe an apology is necessary to recognize the harm and irreversible loss your community has suffered.”
The tragedy unfolded on February 10 when 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar allegedly killed her mother, 39-year-old Jennifer Jacobs, and 11-year-old stepbrother, Emmett Jacobs, in their northern British Columbia home. Van Rootselaar then proceeded to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School where she opened fire, killing five children and an educator before taking her own life. Twenty-five people were also injured in the attack.
In the aftermath of the shooting, OpenAI revealed that their abuse detection systems had identified Van Rootselaar’s account in June of last year for activity related to “furtherance of violent activities.” The San Francisco-based AI company acknowledged they had considered reporting the account to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police but ultimately decided the activity didn’t meet their threshold for law enforcement referral. Instead, OpenAI simply banned the account for violating its usage policy.
Premier Eby had previously criticized the company’s handling of the situation, stating it “looks like” OpenAI had missed an opportunity to prevent the mass shooting.
Altman’s letter mentioned that he had spoken directly with Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka and Premier Eby, who conveyed the “anger, sadness and concern” felt throughout the community. According to Altman, they had agreed a public apology was warranted but that time was needed for the community to grieve first.
“I want to express my deepest condolences to the entire community,” Altman wrote. “No one should ever have to endure a tragedy like this. I cannot imagine anything worse in this world than losing a child. My heart remains with the victims.”
The OpenAI CEO concluded his letter by reaffirming his commitment to preventing similar tragedies in the future, stating, “Going forward, our focus will continue to be on working with all levels of government to help ensure something like this never happens again.”
Premier Eby responded to Altman’s apology on social media, calling it “necessary, and yet grossly insufficient for the devastation done to the families of Tumbler Ridge.”
The incident raises serious questions about the responsibilities of technology companies when they detect potentially dangerous behavior on their platforms. As artificial intelligence tools become increasingly sophisticated at identifying concerning patterns of user behavior, the standards for when and how to involve law enforcement remain largely undefined across the industry.
The tragedy in Tumbler Ridge has sparked renewed calls for clearer guidelines and protocols for tech companies to follow when their systems flag users who may pose a threat to themselves or others. Privacy advocates and tech companies have long debated the appropriate balance between user privacy and public safety, but incidents like this underscore the potentially deadly consequences when warning signs go unreported.
For the small community of Tumbler Ridge, population around 2,000, the apology comes as residents continue to grapple with an unprecedented tragedy that has forever changed their tight-knit town. Local support services have been mobilized to help survivors, families of victims, and the broader community cope with the traumatic aftermath of the shooting.

Apologies are not enough in the wake of such a horrific event. OpenAI must conduct a thorough investigation into their systems and decision-making to understand exactly how this catastrophic failure occurred. Only then can they implement rigorous safeguards to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
