Google Reaches Settlement in Racial Discrimination Lawsuit with Black Employees

Google has finalized a settlement with Black employees who alleged systemic racial discrimination at the tech giant, marking the conclusion of a legal battle that began in 2022. The settlement received final approval this week after being initially announced in May 2025.

The lawsuit was filed by April Curley, a former Google employee, who accused the company of engaging in a “pattern and practice” of unfair treatment toward Black workers. According to the legal complaint, Google routinely steered Black employees into lower-level and lower-paid positions and created a hostile work environment for those who voiced concerns about discriminatory practices.

“This case is about accountability, plain and simple,” said civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represented the plaintiffs. “For far too long, Black employees in the tech industry have faced barriers that limit opportunity. This settlement is a significant step toward holding one of the world’s most powerful companies accountable and making clear that discriminatory practices cannot and will not be tolerated.”

The lawsuit gained momentum when additional former Google employees joined the legal action, which eventually received class action status. This broadened the scope of the case to potentially affect numerous Black employees who worked at the Mountain View, California-based tech giant.

Google has maintained its position throughout the proceedings, stating that it “strongly disagrees with the allegations that it treated anyone improperly” and remains “committed to paying, hiring, and leveling all employees consistently.” The settlement does not constitute an admission of liability on Google’s part.

The 2022 legal filing claimed that Google viewed Black job candidates “through harmful racial stereotypes” and that hiring managers deemed Black candidates “not ‘Googly’ enough, a plain dog whistle for race discrimination.” The lawsuit further alleged that interviewers “hazed” and undermined Black candidates during the hiring process, ultimately placing them in positions with less advancement potential based on racial stereotypes.

This case represents another chapter in a broader narrative of concerns raised by Black employees at Google over the years. One of the most prominent examples came from artificial intelligence scholar Timnit Gebru, who said she was pushed out of the company in 2020 following a dispute over a research paper. Gebru’s paper examined potential societal dangers posed by emerging branches of artificial intelligence, and her departure sparked significant controversy in the tech and AI ethics communities.

As part of the settlement terms, Google has committed to implementing several structural changes aimed at addressing workplace equity issues. These include conducting regular pay equity analyses, increasing pay transparency measures, and limiting mandatory arbitration for employment-related disputes. According to Crump, these commitments will remain in place through at least August 2026.

The settlement comes at a time when the tech industry as a whole faces increasing scrutiny over diversity and inclusion practices. Major technology companies have struggled to improve representation of Black and other underrepresented groups, particularly in technical and leadership roles.

The resolution of this case may serve as a precedent for similar actions against other technology companies. It highlights the growing pressure on Silicon Valley to address systemic issues related to hiring, compensation, and workplace culture that may disadvantage employees from underrepresented backgrounds.

For Google, the settlement represents both a financial cost and a reputational challenge as the company works to demonstrate its commitment to creating an equitable workplace environment for all employees, regardless of race or background.
