Google adds new AI features to Gmail, turning it into a personal assistant

Google is significantly expanding artificial intelligence capabilities within Gmail, transforming the popular email service into a more comprehensive personal assistant that aims to enhance user productivity and communication.

The tech giant announced Thursday a suite of new AI features that represent perhaps the most substantial evolution of Gmail since its launch nearly 22 years ago. With more than 3 billion users worldwide, Gmail has become almost as ubiquitous as Google’s search engine itself, making this AI integration potentially transformative for how billions of people interact with their email.

Initially, these new AI tools will only be available in English to users in the United States, though Google plans to expand availability to additional countries and languages throughout the year.

The most widely accessible new feature will be “Help Me Write,” an AI-powered writing assistant designed to learn individual users’ writing styles. This tool will offer personalized suggestions to improve emails in real-time, helping users craft more effective messages while maintaining their personal voice.

For subscribers of Google’s premium Pro and Ultra services, the company is extending its “AI Overviews” technology, previously introduced to Google Search in 2023. This enhancement will allow users to pose conversational questions in Gmail’s search bar to quickly extract information from their inboxes, potentially eliminating tedious manual searches through thousands of messages.

Perhaps most ambitious is the limited rollout of “AI Inbox” to selected “trusted testers” in the United States. This feature analyzes the contents of users’ inboxes to proactively suggest daily to-do lists and highlight topics that might warrant attention.

“This is us delivering on Gmail proactively having your back,” explained Blake Barnes, Google’s vice president of product, emphasizing the assistant-like functionality these new features bring to the platform.

All these enhancements are powered by Google’s latest AI model, Gemini 3, which was integrated into the company’s search engine late last year. That technology upgrade was reportedly impressive enough to prompt OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to issue a “code red” within his organization, highlighting the competitive significance of Google’s AI advancements.

However, integrating more advanced AI into Gmail carries potential risks and challenges. There are legitimate concerns about AI potentially generating misleading information or crafting inappropriate messages, even though users retain the ability to review AI-suggested content and can disable the features entirely.

Privacy considerations also loom large. From its inception, Gmail faced scrutiny for using inbox content to target advertisements—a practice that initially sparked controversy but eventually became industry standard. Google is now emphasizing that content analyzed by these new AI features will not be used to train Gemini’s underlying models, and the company claims to have built “engineering privacy” barriers to protect user data.

This Gmail evolution represents part of a broader industry trend toward AI integration in productivity tools, as major tech companies race to leverage advances in artificial intelligence to enhance their core products and services. For Google, successfully implementing these features could strengthen Gmail’s market position while advancing the company’s AI capabilities across its ecosystem.
