French First Lady Reunites with Giant Panda During China Visit
French First Lady Brigitte Macron had an emotional reunion with a special friend during her visit to China – a giant panda named Yuan Meng whom she helped name when he was born in France in 2017.
During her visit to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in southwest China on Friday, Macron expressed amazement at how large Yuan Meng had grown. “When they’re born, they’re like this,” she said, holding her fingers a short distance apart to illustrate the panda’s tiny size at birth.
The reunion came at the conclusion of President Emmanuel Macron’s fourth state visit to China, where he engaged in high-level discussions with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on issues ranging from the war in Ukraine to bilateral trade relations.
Yuan Meng, whose name translates to “accomplishment of a dream,” seemed indifferent to the attention, contentedly munching on bamboo while visitors called out his name hoping for a reaction. “They have a very independent character,” Macron noted. “They do only what they want.”
The giant panda, born in France’s Beauval Zoo to parents Huan Huan and Yuan Zi, returned to China in 2023. Despite being born on French soil, Yuan Meng officially belonged to the Chinese government under the terms of China’s panda loan program.
China’s “panda diplomacy,” a practice dating back decades, involves loaning these beloved animals to zoos around the world as a gesture of goodwill and diplomatic relations. The arrangements typically include commercial agreements that benefit China’s conservation efforts while strengthening international ties.
During President Macron’s visit, the China Wildlife Conservation Association announced plans to continue this tradition with France, signing a letter of intent to send two pandas to the Beauval Zoo in 2027 as part of a new 10-year cooperation agreement.
This announcement follows the recent return of Yuan Meng’s parents to China after 13 years at the French zoo. Huan Huan and Yuan Zi, both 17 years old, were sent back to their homeland just last month. The pair also produced female twins, Huanlili and Yuandudu, in France in 2021, who are expected to remain at the Beauval Zoo until January 2027 before eventually returning to China.
The panda exchange highlights the unique relationship between France and China, with these animals serving as living symbols of diplomatic ties. For the French first lady, who is considered Yuan Meng’s “godmother,” the reunion represented more than just international relations – it was a personal moment with an animal she had helped welcome into the world.
Giant pandas remain one of the world’s most recognizable conservation success stories. Once critically endangered, their status has improved to “vulnerable” thanks to extensive breeding programs and habitat protection efforts in China. The loan programs to international zoos have raised awareness and funding for conservation while allowing millions of visitors worldwide to connect with these charismatic animals.
While critics sometimes view panda diplomacy as a strategic soft power tool for China to build international goodwill, the conservation benefits are undeniable. Each loan agreement typically includes substantial funding for panda research and protection of their natural habitats.
As Brigitte Macron concluded her visit to Chengdu, the reunion underscored how these beloved animals continue to bridge cultural and political divides, creating memorable connections between nations through conservation diplomacy.
