France intercepts illegal drone overflight at nuclear submarine base

French authorities are investigating unauthorized drone activity over one of the nation’s most sensitive military installations, defense officials confirmed Friday. Multiple drones were reportedly detected Thursday night flying over the Île Longue naval base in Brittany, which serves as the home port for France’s nuclear submarine fleet.

The facility, located on the Atlantic coast of western France, houses the country’s four nuclear-armed ballistic missile submarines: Le Triomphant, Le Téméraire, Le Vigilant and Le Terrible. These vessels form a critical component of France’s nuclear deterrent strategy, making any security breach particularly concerning for national defense.

Defense Minister Catherine Vautrin acknowledged the incident but provided limited details about the military’s response or the nature of the intrusion. “Any overflight of a military site is prohibited in our country,” Vautrin stated. “I want to commend the interception carried out by our military personnel at the Île Longue base.”
