Ford has issued a significant safety recall affecting more than 200,000 vehicles across its popular Bronco line, federal regulators announced Tuesday. The action comes after discovering a software flaw that can cause instrument panels to fail during vehicle startup, potentially leaving drivers without access to critical safety information.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) detailed that the recall encompasses 128,607 Ford Bronco Sport vehicles from model years 2025-2026, along with 101,002 standard Ford Bronco vehicles from the same model years. The combined recall affects a total of 229,609 vehicles currently on American roads.

According to safety regulators, the instrument panel malfunction presents a meaningful safety hazard as drivers may not have access to essential information like speed, fuel levels, warning lights, and other critical indicators. Without this data, drivers could face impaired decision-making behind the wheel, elevating crash risks.

The Bronco line represents one of Ford’s most significant recent success stories. The automaker revived the classic Bronco nameplate in 2021 after a 25-year hiatus, positioning it as a direct competitor to Jeep’s Wrangler in the growing off-road SUV segment. The smaller Bronco Sport, based on the company’s Escape crossover platform, has become particularly popular among urban drivers seeking a vehicle with rugged styling and moderate off-road capability.

Industry analysts note that this recall comes at a challenging time for Ford, which has been working to improve its quality ratings after facing multiple recalls across its vehicle lineup in recent years. The company has invested heavily in improving its manufacturing processes and quality control systems, making this software-related issue particularly frustrating for the automaker.

Despite the seriousness of the potential safety risk, Ford reports that it is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities linked to the instrument panel failure. The problem was identified through internal quality monitoring and customer reports rather than accident investigations.

The fix for affected vehicles involves a relatively straightforward software update to the vehicle’s electronic systems. Ford has developed updated software that corrects the instrument panel initialization process, ensuring displays function properly each time the vehicle starts.

Ford will begin notifying owners of affected vehicles by mail starting December 8, 2023. The notification will instruct owners to schedule an appointment with their local Ford or Lincoln dealership, where technicians will update the vehicle software at no cost to customers. The repair process is expected to take less than an hour to complete.

Owners who wish to verify if their vehicle is included in the recall can visit Ford’s dedicated recall website or contact Ford’s customer service department. They can also check their vehicle identification number (VIN) against the NHTSA’s recall database using reference number 25V540.

This recall follows a broader industry trend of increasing software-related recalls as vehicles become more technologically sophisticated. Modern vehicles rely on complex computer systems controlling everything from engine performance to safety features, creating new categories of potential malfunctions that weren’t possible in earlier automotive generations.

The NHTSA encourages all affected Bronco and Bronco Sport owners to respond promptly when they receive their recall notices, emphasizing that even seemingly minor software issues can have significant safety implications if left unaddressed.

Agreed, recalls can be tricky for automakers, but safety should always come first. Hopefully Ford can get this resolved quickly with minimal disruption to Bronco owners.

The Bronco has been a real bright spot for Ford, so this recall is certainly unwelcome news. But better to address it head-on than let it linger. I’m curious to see if this impacts Bronco sales and market share going forward.

    • Good point. The Bronco revival has been a real success story for Ford, so they’ll want to get out in front of this issue quickly. Hopefully it doesn’t undo all the hard work they’ve put into rebuilding the brand.

  3. Instrument panel failures are no joke – that’s a critical safety issue. Kudos to the NHTSA for catching this and forcing Ford’s hand. Hopefully the automaker can get these vehicles repaired quickly to minimize any disruption.

Absolutely. When it comes to vehicle safety, regulators have to be vigilant. It’s good to see the NHTSA taking this seriously and requiring a prompt recall response from Ford.

  4. Lucas Thompson on

The sheer number of affected vehicles is quite large. 200,000+ Broncos and Bronco Sports is a significant recall. I wonder what the root cause is and if it’s an isolated software issue or something more systemic.

Good point. A recall of this scale likely indicates a more widespread problem. Hopefully Ford can identify the root cause and implement a fix that restores confidence in the Bronco lineup.

Instrument panel failures are a serious safety hazard, so Ford is right to be proactive here. The scale of the recall is quite large, though, so it will be a significant undertaking for the automaker to get all those vehicles repaired.
