Conservative Media Targets New York’s Mayor-Elect Mamdani as Latest Political Villain

Zohran Mamdani hasn’t yet taken office as New York City’s mayor, but he’s already become the latest lightning rod for conservative media outlets across the country. Portrayed as everything from a “commie” to a “Marxist jihadist sympathizer,” Mamdani is rapidly emerging as a figure that right-wing commentators believe can energize their audience ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

The intensity of the coverage was highlighted by a New York Post post-election cover depicting Mamdani holding the Soviet Union’s hammer and sickle symbol. The issue sold out on newsstands by noon and was subsequently offered on eBay for $75. By day’s end, the Post had expanded its merchandise line to include baby onesies and commemorative plates featuring the controversial cover.

“It’s very clear that he’s going to be the No. 1 target of right-wing media for the foreseeable future,” said Howard Polskin, publisher of The Righting, a newsletter tracking conservative media. “He’s colorful, controversial and not afraid of a fight.”

Rob Bluey, president of the conservative Daily Signal, acknowledged this dynamic, noting: “Remember years ago there was Nancy Pelosi who was the bogeyman for Republicans. I think Mamdani is probably going to be the new person.”

Much of the criticism centers on Mamdani’s membership in the Democratic Socialists of America and his Muslim background. In the Washington Examiner, editor-in-chief Hugo Gurdon described Mamdani’s election night speech as “downright sinister,” claiming he “took off his smiling campaign mask and revealed his venomous self.”

On Newsmax, host Rob Schmitt called Mamdani the “mayor for the foreign-born,” adding, “We have flooded the country with diversity, and diversity delivered us Zohran.” When interviewed, Schmitt denied manufacturing outrage, claiming conservatives are “just appropriately concerned about people that are spewing or trying to push an ideology that is destined to not work.”

The New York Post signaled its focus on Mamdani well before the election. Between October 27 and November 5, he appeared on seven covers with headlines like “Mam-Child” and “Not Zo Fast.” On Election Day, the tabloid’s lead headline read: “Trump to New York: Keep the Commie Out.”

Despite these portrayals, Mamdani has reached out to the White House for a meeting with President Trump, who indicated they would “work something out.”

The label of “communist” has been frequently applied to Mamdani despite his explicit denial. When asked on NBC’s “Meet the Press” if he was a communist, Mamdani responded, “No, I am not.” This distinction seems lost on many critics, including Trump, who said in a “60 Minutes” interview, “Communist, not socialist. Communist. He’s far worse than a socialist.”

Some criticism has taken on religious overtones. Megyn Kelly claimed the tenets of Islam are “inconsistent with American values” and Muslims should not be elected mayors or governors. Podcaster Michael Savage labeled him a “Marxist jihadist sympathizer,” while influencer Laura Loomer predicted Mamdani would encourage Muslims to commit political assassinations.

Mamdani, whose staff did not respond to requests for comment, has previously addressed such attacks: “I thought that if I behaved well enough or bit my tongue enough in the face of racist, baseless attacks all while returning back to my central message, it would allow me to be more than just my faith,” he said. “I was wrong. No amount of redirection is ever enough.”

Media analysts note this approach represents a familiar political strategy. “He’s the new AOC in the sense that they have found someone who is relatively unknown that they get to define and hold up as the example of what it means to be a Democrat,” said Angelo Carusone, president of Media Matters for America, a liberal media watchdog.

The Victory Girls blog underscored this framing, writing: “The socialists are coming, and Mamdani is just the beginning. If we ignore them, we will all be in big trouble.”

While it remains to be seen if Mamdani will attain the same villain status as Clinton or Pelosi in conservative media circles, the urgency behind these portrayals is clear. As Carusone noted, “If you don’t check him now, he’s going to capture the young people.”

The intensity of the conservative media coverage on Mamdani is quite telling. They see him as a threat and want to discredit him early on. But these heavy-handed attacks may backfire and only make him more popular with his base.

  2. Interesting to see the conservative media targeting Mayor-elect Mamdani so aggressively even before he takes office. He seems like a polarizing figure, but I wonder if the right-wing attacks could actually boost his profile and popularity.

  3. The conservative media’s aggressive attacks on Mamdani are clearly a strategic move to undermine him before he can even take office. Whether this tactic will work remains to be seen, but it does suggest that he’s viewed as a serious threat by the right.

It’s not surprising that a left-leaning politician like Mamdani would be a target for right-wing media. But the extent to which they are already attacking him, even before he takes office, is quite remarkable. Voters will have to see through the partisan noise and judge him on his actual policies and actions.

  5. The conservative media’s fixation on Mamdani seems more about political theater than substantive issues. They’re trying to paint him as a boogeyman to rile up their base. But voters should focus on Mamdani’s actual platform and plans for the city, not the media’s hyperbolic narratives.
