Eight people have died and 40 others were injured in a devastating fire that engulfed a shopping center near Tehran, according to an announcement made Wednesday by the Iranian capital’s emergency service department.

The blaze broke out Tuesday at the Arghavan shopping center, located in Andisheh town in Tehran province. Dramatic footage broadcast on Iranian state television showed firefighters struggling to control the flames as thick black smoke poured from the multi-story commercial building.

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire. Iran’s state television IRIB reported that an investigation into the incident is currently underway. The shopping center, a significant commercial hub in the region, housed numerous businesses and attracted regular customer traffic from surrounding areas.

Emergency response teams worked through the night to contain the fire and rescue trapped individuals. Local hospitals mobilized additional staff to handle the influx of injured victims, many suffering from smoke inhalation and burns of varying severity. Medical authorities have not yet released the identities of those who perished in the incident.

The fire represents one of the more serious commercial building disasters in the Tehran area in recent years. Urban safety experts have previously raised concerns about fire safety standards in some of Iran’s older commercial buildings, particularly regarding emergency exits, sprinkler systems, and building materials that may not meet modern safety codes.

Andisheh town, located approximately 30 kilometers west of central Tehran, is a growing residential and commercial area that has seen significant development in recent decades as Tehran’s urban sprawl has expanded. The Arghavan shopping center served as an important retail destination for local residents.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as the fire spread rapidly through the building. “The smoke was so thick you couldn’t see more than a few meters ahead,” said one bystander who was shopping nearby when the fire erupted. “People were running in all directions trying to escape.”

Local officials have promised a thorough investigation into potential safety violations or structural issues that might have contributed to the tragedy. In similar past incidents, investigators have identified problems such as blocked emergency exits, inadequate fire suppression systems, or electrical wiring deficiencies.

Iranian officials emphasized that there is no indication the fire was related to any external conflict or attack. The country has maintained a tenuous ceasefire with the United States for approximately three weeks, following a period of heightened tensions in the region. The clarification appears intended to prevent speculation about potential sabotage or military action in the wake of the disaster.

In recent years, Iran has experienced several high-profile building fires, including the 2017 Plasco Building collapse in Tehran, which killed 20 firefighters and injured dozens of others. That incident prompted calls for stricter enforcement of building safety regulations throughout the country.

Local authorities have announced that counseling services will be made available to families affected by the tragedy, and a special committee has been formed to address immediate needs of business owners who lost their livelihoods in the fire.

Officials expect the investigation into the cause of the fire to take several weeks as forensic teams examine the damaged structure and review any available security camera footage that might shed light on how and where the blaze originated.
