Misinformation Floods Social Media Following Fatal ICE Shooting in Minneapolis

In the wake of Wednesday’s fatal shooting of Minneapolis resident Renee Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer, a wave of fabricated images and false information has spread rapidly across social media platforms, further complicating an already tense situation.

The incident, which has drawn national attention and sparked local protests, has become a breeding ground for misinformation as social media users rushed to identify both the victim and the officer involved, often with inaccurate or completely fabricated details.

Digital forensics experts have identified numerous instances of AI-generated images purporting to show the unmasked face of the ICE officer involved in the shooting. These fabricated images appear to be screenshots from footage of the incident, with the background matching the location, but video evidence confirms the officer never appeared without a mask at the scene.

“Under considerably more favorable conditions than in this example of the masked ICE agent, AI enhancement/reconstruction is not consistently reliable,” explained Hany Farid, a digital forensics and misinformation expert at the University of California, Berkeley. “In this situation where half of the face is obscured, AI (or any other technique) is not, in my opinion, able to accurately reconstruct the facial identity.”

The officer’s identity has also been the subject of widespread misinformation. While federal officials have not officially named the officer, Associated Press reporting has identified him as Jonathan Ross, a veteran with nearly two decades of service in the U.S. Border Patrol and ICE. Despite this, many social media posts incorrectly named the officer as Steve Grove, in some cases falsely connecting him to the CEO and publisher of the Minnesota Star Tribune.

The newspaper has since issued a statement addressing the situation: “We are currently monitoring a coordinated online disinformation campaign incorrectly identifying the ICE agent involved in yesterday’s shooting. To be clear, the ICE agent has no known affiliation with the Star Tribune.”

Similarly, photos purportedly showing Renee Good, the 37-year-old mother of three who was killed, have been widely circulated but are actually images of other women. In one instance, photos of Renee Paquette, a former WWE wrestler, with her daughter were misrepresented as showing Good. Paquette herself commented on one of the misleading posts: “Wrong Renée. My condolences to her family.”

Another false identification involved photos from a 2020 Old Dominion University Facebook post announcing poetry prize winners. A photo of Gabriela Szczepankiewicz, who received an honorable mention, was incorrectly identified as Good. The actual photo of Good, identified as Renee Macklin in the post, appears third in the original announcement.

Perhaps most disturbing has been the circulation of an image showing a man with what appears to be a Nazi tattoo on his neck, falsely identified as the ICE officer who shot Good. This image actually comes from an Instagram video posted two days before the shooting and shows a completely different individual. Video footage from the actual incident clearly shows that the ICE officer involved does not have such a tattoo.

The spread of misinformation has extended to political figures as well. A video clip of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis discussing protest policies has been misrepresented as him defending Good’s shooting. The video actually comes from a June interview on “The Rubin Report” where DeSantis was discussing Florida’s policies regarding protests that block roads, completely unrelated to the Minneapolis incident.

The rapid spread of false information surrounding this case highlights the challenges authorities face in managing public perception during high-profile incidents. It also underscores the increasing sophistication of digital manipulation techniques and the ease with which misinformation can spread across social media platforms during emotionally charged events.

As investigations into the shooting continue, officials urge the public to rely on verified sources and to exercise caution when sharing information online.
