FAA and FBI warn drone pilots after incidents at Colorado Rockies games

Law enforcement officials are heightening security measures after multiple drone sightings disrupted the Colorado Rockies’ season opener at Coors Field earlier this month, raising concerns about potential threats to public safety at major sporting events.

During the Rockies’ first homestand against the Philadelphia Phillies from April 3-5, authorities documented more than half a dozen unauthorized drone flights near the stadium. While no arrests were made at the time, the Federal Aviation Administration and FBI issued a joint warning on Thursday urging drone operators to avoid the area during upcoming home games.

“The illegal drone activity did not jeopardize anyone’s safety, but there were enough violations that the teams on the ground were concerned about the number of operators that did not seem to understand the seriousness of the situation,” FBI spokeswoman Vikki Migoya explained, describing the warning as “proactive messaging.”

The FAA maintains strict airspace restrictions around major sporting venues, prohibiting drone flights within a three-mile radius of Coors Field from one hour before until one hour after each game. These regulations aim to protect spectators and prevent disruptions to gameplay.

Security concerns have intensified in recent years as drone technology has become more accessible to the public while simultaneously evolving into a significant security threat. The greatest fear, according to security experts, is the potential for drones to be weaponized in a manner similar to those used in combat zones in Ukraine and the Middle East. This growing threat has prompted World Cup host cities and federal agencies to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in drone defense systems ahead of upcoming international tournaments.

Beyond the potential for malicious attacks, Migoya emphasized that even seemingly harmless drone incursions create serious problems for security personnel. “Every instance of illegal drone activity requires a law enforcement intervention to ensure the intent is not nefarious; the fewer violations there are, the more law enforcement can focus on what might be a true threat,” she said.

The growing prevalence of recreational and commercial drones has created a complex challenge for stadium security across the United States. According to aviation security analysts, major sporting events present particularly attractive targets for both innocent enthusiasts seeking aerial footage and potentially malicious actors.

Drone operators who violate these airspace restrictions face severe consequences. The FAA warned that violators could incur fines up to $75,000 per incident and potentially lose their pilot licenses. While modern drones are required to broadcast their location information, authorities also employ specialized detection systems that can track and identify operators who attempt to circumvent these regulations.

The incidents at Coors Field reflect a national trend of increasing drone encounters at sporting venues. Similar situations have occurred at NFL games, NASCAR races, and other MLB stadiums in recent years, prompting greater coordination between sports leagues, venue management, and federal authorities.

The FAA has worked to raise public awareness of drone restrictions through its B4UFLY mobile app and website, which provide real-time information about flight restrictions. However, officials acknowledge that many recreational drone operators remain unaware of or choose to ignore these regulations.

As the Rockies prepare for their upcoming homestand, local and federal authorities will maintain heightened vigilance around Coors Field. Security experts say that public education remains crucial in preventing further incidents, as many drone violations stem from ignorance rather than malicious intent.
