Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI will invest $20 billion to build a massive data center in Southaven, Mississippi, marking what Governor Tate Reeves called the largest private investment in the state’s history.
The facility, named MACROHARDRR, will be constructed in DeSoto County near Memphis, Tennessee, becoming xAI’s third data center in the greater Memphis area. According to xAI Chief Financial Officer Anthony Armstrong, this cluster of facilities will collectively house “the world’s largest supercomputer” with an impressive 2 gigawatts of computing power.
“This historic investment will transform Mississippi’s technology landscape and create substantial economic opportunities for our residents,” Governor Reeves said during Thursday’s announcement ceremony, where he personally thanked Musk for selecting the state for this landmark project.
The governor projected the development would generate hundreds of permanent jobs, thousands of indirect subcontracting positions, and significant tax revenue to bolster public services throughout the region. Operations at the Southaven facility are expected to begin as early as next month.
However, the announcement comes amid growing scrutiny over xAI’s existing data centers in the Memphis metropolitan area. The NAACP and the Southern Environmental Law Center have raised concerns about air pollution generated by xAI’s supercomputer facility, particularly its proximity to predominantly Black communities in Memphis.
Local opposition has also emerged from Southaven residents. A petition by the Safe and Sound Coalition, a community group opposing xAI’s developments in the area, has gathered more than 900 signatures calling for the shutdown of the company’s operations. The petition highlights environmental and community impact worries that have not been fully addressed.
When asked about these environmental concerns, xAI did not immediately respond with comments. However, a fact sheet distributed by the Mississippi governor’s office stated that environmental responsibility remains a “core commitment” for the AI company, though specific details about sustainability measures were not elaborated upon.
The substantial investment comes with equally substantial tax incentives. Under legislation passed earlier this year specifically designed to attract data centers, Mississippi will waive all sales, corporate income, and franchise taxes on the xAI development. The sales tax exemption alone on computing equipment is expected to represent significant savings for the company, though the Mississippi Development Authority has not disclosed how much tax revenue the state will forgo through these incentives.
Additionally, local governments have offered their own financial sweeteners. DeSoto County and Southaven city officials have agreed to dramatically reduce property taxes for the facility, further enhancing the attractiveness of the location for xAI’s expansion.
