Prime Video Makes Historic Move Into College Basketball With Duke Partnership

Amazon’s streaming service Prime Video is breaking new ground in college sports broadcasting by partnering with Duke University, one of basketball’s most prestigious programs.

The multiyear agreement, announced Thursday, will bring three of Duke’s neutral-site nonconference games per season to the streaming platform. This represents Prime Video’s first venture into college sports, expanding their portfolio that already includes NFL and NBA broadcasts.

Viewers this fall will have access to three high-profile matchups. The Blue Devils will face defending national champion UConn on November 25 in Las Vegas, setting up a rematch of last season’s dramatic Elite Eight contest where the Huskies overcame a 19-point deficit to win on a last-second shot.

Duke will then take on Michigan at New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden on December 21, followed by a February 20 clash with perennial powerhouse Gonzaga in Detroit. These matchups feature some of college basketball’s most successful and popular programs.

“Duke basketball games transcend the schedule,” said Charlie Neiman, Prime Video’s head of sports partnerships. “The creation of this all-new offering gives fans more of what we all want, marquee matchups featuring the most successful programs in the nation.”

The arrangement reflects the evolving landscape of college sports media rights, as streaming platforms increasingly compete with traditional broadcasters for premium content. Prime Video has steadily built its live sports portfolio in recent years, with the Duke partnership representing a significant step into the collegiate market.

For Duke, the deal offers expanded visibility while working within their existing conference media agreements. The university noted that it had negotiated additional participation in ESPN-operated events during the 2027-28 and 2028-29 seasons “in exchange for the flexibility” to schedule these Prime Video broadcasts. ESPN maintains a partnership with Duke’s Atlantic Coast Conference.

Duke athletic director Nina King emphasized the global reach this partnership brings to a program that has already won five NCAA championships and developed one of college basketball’s strongest international brands.

“This agreement expands the global reach for Duke basketball,” King stated. “It allows us to showcase our program on one of the world’s leading streaming platforms while maintaining our commitment to our conference media partners.”

The deal comes amid rapid transformation in college sports broadcasting, with streaming services increasingly willing to pay premium prices for live sports content. Traditional television networks have long dominated college sports broadcasting, but digital platforms are gaining ground as viewing habits shift and streaming becomes mainstream.

Industry experts view this partnership as potentially opening the door for more direct deals between streaming platforms and individual universities or conferences. While conference-wide media rights deals remain the norm, this arrangement demonstrates creative ways schools can expand their broadcast footprint.

For Prime Video, securing Duke basketball represents a strategic entry point into college sports. The Blue Devils consistently rank among the most-watched college basketball teams nationwide and have a multigenerational fanbase that extends well beyond their North Carolina campus.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, though streaming rights for premium college sports content have seen significant valuation increases in recent years as platforms compete for exclusive live programming.

The first Prime Video broadcast featuring Duke will be the highly anticipated UConn matchup on November 25, giving college basketball fans another viewing option as the streaming wars extend further into collegiate athletics.
