Polish Prime Minister Alleges Russian-Backed Crypto Firm Sponsored Conservative Politicians

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has accused a cryptocurrency company built with “Russian money” of sponsoring politicians from the former national-conservative government and a Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) event in Poland last year. The allegations came during a parliamentary speech on Friday as lawmakers prepared to vote on overriding President Karol Nawrocki’s veto of cryptocurrency market regulations.

Tusk claimed that the blocking of regulations by certain Polish politicians suggests they are serving the interests of Zondacrypto, a company he alleges provided them with financial support and maintains connections to Russia.

“The source of this company’s financial success is not only Russian money linked to the so-called Bratva, one of the most important mafia groups in Russia, but also to Russian secret services,” Tusk said in his address to parliament.

According to the Prime Minister, Zondacrypto has been “sponsoring political and social events in Poland and promotes very specific political forces,” including financing politicians from the formerly governing Law and Justice party and the far-right Confederation party.

The allegations come amid growing concerns about foreign influence in European politics, particularly as cryptocurrency markets remain largely unregulated in many jurisdictions. Poland’s efforts to implement EU-compliant regulations for crypto assets have been stymied twice by presidential vetoes in the past six months.

Tusk specifically highlighted Zondacrypto’s role as a strategic sponsor of a CPAC event in Rzeszow, eastern Poland, in March 2025. The conference took place just five days before a hotly contested presidential election between a candidate from Tusk’s liberal camp and Nawrocki, who was backed by the Law and Justice party.

During that CPAC meeting, then-U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, a prominent ally of former President Donald Trump, openly supported Nawrocki. Noem described the liberal candidate as “an absolute train wreck of a leader” and portrayed Nawrocki as someone who would lead Poland in a style similar to Trump’s leadership approach.

“We need you to elect the right leader,” Noem told the audience. “You will be the leaders that will turn Europe back to conservative values.”

The Prime Minister further alleged that President Nawrocki was “fully aware” of all details concerning Zondacrypto when deciding to veto the new crypto regulations. These vetoes have significantly delayed Poland’s implementation of cryptocurrency market oversight that would align with European Union standards.

In response to Tusk’s accusations, Zbigniew Bogucki, the head of the president’s office, defended Nawrocki’s position, stating that the president was not opposed to regulating the crypto-assets market in principle but objected to what he called a “flawed regulatory model” proposed by the government.

Sławomir Mentzen, leader of the Confederation party, offered a more direct defense of the veto, arguing that the proposed legislation would have “destroyed the Polish cryptocurrency market.”

The government maintains that the new regulations are necessary to bring Poland into compliance with European Union rules on crypto-assets. The EU has been pushing member states to implement comprehensive oversight frameworks as digital assets continue to grow in popularity and economic importance across the continent.

Zondacrypto has not directly responded to the accusations made by Tusk. However, the company told Polish media earlier this week that it was cooperating with Polish authorities investigating allegations against it.

The controversy highlights the increasingly complex intersection of cryptocurrency, politics, and national security concerns in Eastern Europe, where Russian influence remains a particularly sensitive issue. As digital currencies continue to evolve as both financial instruments and potential vehicles for foreign influence, the regulatory frameworks governing them have become increasingly politicized.
