Tesla has initiated a recall of 173 Cybertrucks due to a critical safety concern involving potential wheel separation, according to recent filings with federal regulators.

The recall specifically targets 2024-2026 Cybertruck models equipped with 18-inch steel wheels. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that the issue stems from the wheel rotor’s vulnerability to cracking under certain driving conditions. Rough road surfaces and cornering maneuvers can place excessive strain on the stud hole in the wheel rotor, potentially leading to crack formation. With continued use, these cracks may progress to the point where wheel studs completely separate from the wheel hub.

Such a failure significantly compromises vehicle control and stability, substantially increasing the risk of accidents and injuries. The problem is particularly concerning given the Cybertruck’s size and weight, which could amplify the consequences of any loss of control.

In response to this safety issue, Tesla has announced it will replace the front and rear brake rotors, hubs, and lug nuts on affected vehicles with more durable components. These repairs will be conducted at no cost to Cybertruck owners. Tesla has assigned the manufacturer’s recall number SB-26-33-003 to this action.

The Cybertruck recall comes at a challenging time for Tesla’s newest vehicle offering, which began deliveries in late 2023 after significant production delays. The futuristic pickup truck, with its distinctive stainless steel exoskeleton and angular design, represents one of Tesla’s most ambitious vehicle projects to date, with prices starting around $80,000.

In addition to the Cybertruck recall, Tesla has simultaneously announced a separate, larger recall affecting over 200,000 vehicles across its lineup. This second recall encompasses Model Y, Model S, Model X, and Model 3 electric vehicles due to a software glitch that temporarily renders the rearview camera inoperative.

The rearview camera issue could potentially impair driver visibility, particularly during reversing maneuvers, thereby increasing collision risk. This software-related recall has been assigned the identification number SB-26-00-016.

The dual recalls add to Tesla’s growing list of quality and safety concerns. Over the past several years, the electric vehicle manufacturer has faced multiple recalls for issues ranging from software glitches to physical component failures. These incidents have raised questions about quality control measures at the company, which has prioritized rapid innovation and production scaling.

Despite these concerns, Tesla maintains that it has no knowledge of any accidents, injuries, or fatalities directly linked to either of the newly announced recalls. This suggests the company is taking preemptive action to address potential safety risks before they result in real-world incidents.

Tesla owners seeking additional information about these recalls can contact Tesla’s customer service department at 1-877-798-3752. The company is expected to notify affected owners directly with instructions for obtaining the necessary repairs.

The automotive industry has been watching Tesla’s Cybertruck rollout closely, as it represents the company’s first entry into the lucrative pickup truck market dominated by traditional automakers like Ford, General Motors, and Ram. Any significant quality or safety issues could impact consumer confidence in the vehicle and Tesla’s broader reputation for innovation in the electric vehicle sector.

Industry analysts note that while recalls are common across the automotive industry, they can be particularly challenging for newer vehicle models with innovative designs and components, as manufacturers work to identify and resolve unforeseen issues that weren’t detected during development and testing phases.
