Thai Court Issues Arrest Warrant for Miss Universe Co-Owner in Fraud Case
A Thai court has issued an arrest warrant for Jakkaphong “Anne” Jakrajutatip, a co-owner of the Miss Universe Organization, after she failed to appear for a scheduled court hearing related to fraud allegations.
The Bangkok South District Court ordered the warrant on Wednesday after Jakrajutatip, who was released on bail in 2023, missed her required Tuesday court appearance. The court deemed her a flight risk since she provided no notification about her absence and has rescheduled the hearing for December 26.
According to court documents, Jakrajutatip and her company, JKN Global Group Public Co. Ltd., are accused of defrauding investor Raweewat Maschamadol in a corporate bond sale last year. Raweewat claims the investment resulted in losses of approximately 30 million baht (US$930,362).
The legal troubles add to JKN’s ongoing financial crisis. The company defaulted on payments to investors beginning in 2023 and entered debt rehabilitation procedures with Thailand’s Central Bankruptcy Court earlier this year. JKN reportedly carries debts totaling around 3 billion baht (US$93 million).
JKN initially made headlines in 2022 when it acquired the Miss Universe pageant from IMG Worldwide LLC. However, facing mounting financial pressures, the company sold 50% of its Miss Universe shares in 2023 to Legacy Holding Group USA, owned by Mexican businessman Raúl Rocha Cantú.
Complicating matters further, Rocha Cantú is currently embroiled in his own legal troubles in Mexico. Federal prosecutors announced Wednesday that he has been under investigation since November 2024 for alleged involvement in organized crime, including drug trafficking, arms dealing, and fuel theft.
The Mexican Attorney General’s Office confirmed an investigation targeting Raúl “R,” and a federal agent who requested anonymity verified this refers to Rocha Cantú. Earlier this month, a federal judge in Mexico approved 13 arrest orders connected to the case, although officials would not confirm whether Rocha Cantú is among those facing arrest.
Jakrajutatip’s current whereabouts remain unknown. She resigned from all company positions in June after Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission accused her of falsifying JKN’s 2023 financial statements, though she reportedly remains the company’s largest shareholder. Her absence was notable at the 74th Miss Universe competition held in Bangkok earlier this month.
The recent pageant faced numerous controversies, including a public scolding of contestant Fátima Bosch Fernández of Mexico, who ultimately won the crown on November 19. Two judges reportedly withdrew from the competition, with one suggesting potential manipulation in the contest. Additionally, Thai police investigated allegations of illegal promotion of online casinos in the event’s publicity materials.
On Monday, JKN issued a statement denying rumors that Jakrajutatip had liquidated company assets and fled Thailand. However, the company has not yet responded to news of the arrest warrant.
Jakrajutatip is well-known in Thailand as a media figure who has appeared in various reality shows and is recognized as an outspoken transgender woman. The Miss Universe Organization has not responded to requests for comment regarding the situation.
The legal and financial turmoil surrounding both co-owners of the Miss Universe Organization raises questions about the future leadership and stability of the iconic international pageant as it moves forward following its recent controversial competition.
