Austrian authorities have arrested a 39-year-old suspect in connection with a case of tampered baby food that prompted a major recall across three central European countries, officials announced Saturday.

The Burgenland State Criminal Police Office reported that the investigation began after rat poison was discovered in a jar of HiPP baby food purchased at a supermarket in Eisenstadt on April 18. The public prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into suspected “intentional endangerment of the public,” though authorities have withheld further details as questioning of the suspect continues.

German-based HiPP, one of Europe’s largest organic baby food manufacturers, expressed relief following the arrest. “We are greatly relieved by this development,” the company stated, promising to provide additional information as verified details become available.

According to the Austrian Press Agency, authorities seized a total of five tampered baby food jars before they could be consumed. An expert assessment regarding the toxicity of the poison is still pending. Officials believe the tampering specifically targeted 190-gram jars of baby food containing carrots and potatoes, formulated for infants as young as five months old, which were distributed to SPAR supermarkets across Austria.

In response to the contamination discovery, HiPP implemented a widespread precautionary recall of all its baby food products sold at SPAR chains – including SPAR, EUROSPAR, INTERSPAR, and Maximarkt locations – throughout Austria. The recall subsequently expanded to neighboring Slovakia and the Czech Republic, where retailers removed all HiPP baby food jars from their shelves.

The company emphasized that the recall was not related to any manufacturing or quality defects on their part. “Our products left our facility in perfect condition,” HiPP stated in their release, clarifying that they were victims of a criminal act rather than responsible for a production issue.

The case began when a vigilant customer reported suspicions that a jar had been tampered with. Fortunately, no infants consumed the contaminated products, according to police reports.

HiPP has also revealed that it became the “victim of extortion” in connection with the tampering. The company disclosed that an unidentified “blackmailer” sent a message to a shared mailbox, prompting immediate notification of law enforcement authorities.

Food tampering cases involving baby products are particularly alarming for consumers and manufacturers alike, as they target the most vulnerable population and can severely damage brand trust. This incident echoes previous food tampering cases in Europe, which have typically led to enhanced security measures throughout the supply chain and at retail locations.

The baby food industry, valued at over $67 billion globally, operates under strict quality control standards, making deliberate tampering cases rare but particularly concerning when they occur. For companies like HiPP, which positions itself as a premium organic brand with a focus on safety and purity, such incidents present both immediate operational challenges and potential long-term reputational risks.

Austrian authorities have not yet revealed a potential motive for the tampering or details about how the suspect gained access to the products. The investigation continues as officials work to determine whether all contaminated products have been successfully removed from circulation.

Consumer safety experts advise parents to always inspect baby food packaging for signs of tampering, such as broken seals or unusual appearance, before use.
