NASA Astronaut Reveals Details of Mysterious Medical Emergency in Space

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Veteran astronaut Mike Fincke disclosed Friday that doctors remain puzzled about the sudden medical emergency that prompted NASA’s first-ever space station evacuation earlier this year, despite months of testing since his return to Earth.

The 59-year-old retired Air Force colonel was eating dinner aboard the International Space Station on January 7, preparing for a scheduled spacewalk the following day, when he unexpectedly fell ill. The episode, which Fincke described as striking “like a very, very fast lightning bolt,” lasted approximately 20 minutes.

“It was completely out of the blue. It was just amazingly quick,” Fincke told The Associated Press in an interview from Houston’s Johnson Space Center. “My crewmates definitely saw that I was in distress,” he added, noting that all six astronauts aboard immediately gathered around him. “It was all hands on deck within just a matter of seconds.”

According to Fincke, he couldn’t speak during the incident, though he recalls feeling no pain. His concerned crewmates immediately contacted flight surgeons on Earth for guidance. While doctors have ruled out a heart attack and Fincke confirmed he wasn’t choking, the exact cause remains unknown. Medical experts are considering whether the condition might be related to his extensive time in microgravity—Fincke has accumulated 549 days in space across four missions.

The space station’s ultrasound equipment proved valuable during the emergency, providing critical diagnostic information. Since returning to Earth, Fincke has undergone extensive medical testing. NASA is also reviewing other astronauts’ medical records for any similar incidents that might have occurred during previous space missions.

The incident had significant operational impacts. The scheduled spacewalk was canceled—what would have been Fincke’s 10th extravehicular activity but the first for crewmate Zena Cardman. More dramatically, NASA made the unprecedented decision to bring Fincke and three other crew members back to Earth ahead of schedule. SpaceX transported them home on January 15, more than a month earlier than planned, and they were immediately taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Fincke only publicly identified himself as the affected astronaut late last month, ending weeks of speculation about which crew member had experienced the medical emergency. He expressed regret about the mission disruption, saying, “I still feel bad that my illness caused the spacewalk to be canceled and resulted in an early return for her [Cardman] and our two other crewmates.”

The incident highlights the complex medical challenges of long-duration spaceflight, a critical concern as NASA and international partners plan extended missions to the Moon and Mars. While the ISS has sophisticated medical equipment and procedures for handling emergencies, evacuation options are limited and time-consuming. This case represents the most serious medical evacuation in the space station’s 25-year operational history.

Despite the health scare, Fincke maintains his characteristic optimism and hasn’t ruled out another space mission. “I’ve been very lucky to be super healthy. So this was very surprising for everyone,” he said. He initially apologized repeatedly to colleagues until NASA’s new administrator Jared Isaacman instructed him to stop.

“This wasn’t you. This was space, right?” his colleagues reassured him. “You didn’t let anybody down.”

NASA has provided limited information about the incident, citing medical privacy concerns. Fincke emphasized this point, stating, “The space agency wants to make sure that other astronauts do not feel that their medical privacy will be compromised if something happens to them.”

As medical investigations continue, the incident serves as a reminder of the inherent risks astronauts face during extended missions in the harsh environment of space, even with years of training and preparation.
