Artificial intelligence company Anthropic revealed plans Wednesday for a $50 billion investment in computing infrastructure, including new data centers in Texas and New York, signaling the tech industry’s continued aggressive expansion of AI capabilities despite various concerns.

On the same day, Microsoft announced construction of a new data center in Atlanta, Georgia. The facility will connect with another in Wisconsin to form what the company describes as a “massive supercomputer” powered by hundreds of thousands of Nvidia chips to support AI development.

These major investments demonstrate the tech sector’s determination to build energy-intensive AI infrastructure despite lingering questions about financial sustainability, environmental impact, and the burden on local power grids that could lead to rising electricity costs for nearby communities.

Anthropic, creator of the AI assistant Claude, is partnering with London-based Fluidstack to build its new computing facilities. While specific locations weren’t disclosed, cryptocurrency mining data center developer TeraWulf has previously revealed its collaboration with Fluidstack on Google-backed data center projects in Texas and near Lake Ontario in New York. TeraWulf declined to comment on Wednesday’s announcement.

The scale of data center expansion has reached unprecedented levels. A recent report from TD Cowen highlighted that leading cloud computing providers leased a “staggering” 7.4 gigawatts of energy capacity for U.S. data centers in the third fiscal quarter of 2023 alone—exceeding the total for all of last year.

Oracle led this expansion, primarily supporting AI workloads for OpenAI, Anthropic’s chief competitor and maker of ChatGPT. Google secured the second-largest capacity, with Fluidstack coming in third, ahead of technology giants Meta, Amazon, CoreWeave, and Microsoft.

Anthropic estimates its projects will generate approximately 800 permanent jobs and 2,400 construction positions. The company justified the massive investment as “necessary to meet the growing demand for Claude from hundreds of thousands of businesses while keeping our research at the frontier.”

Microsoft’s new Atlanta facility, branded as Fairwater 2, complements its original Fairwater complex near Milwaukee. The company indicated these facilities will power not only its own technology but also systems from OpenAI and other AI developers. Earlier this year, Microsoft and OpenAI modified their previously exclusive cloud computing partnership, with OpenAI subsequently announcing infrastructure commitments exceeding $1 trillion through its Stargate project with Oracle and SoftBank.

The tech industry’s enormous spending on computing infrastructure for AI startups—many of which have yet to demonstrate profitability—continues to fuel concerns about a potential AI investment bubble. Investors are closely monitoring the complex web of deals between leading AI developers like OpenAI and Anthropic and the companies manufacturing the costly computer chips and data centers essential to their operations.

Despite these concerns, Anthropic maintains it will “prioritize cost-effective, capital-efficient approaches” as it scales its business. This balancing act between aggressive expansion and financial prudence reflects the broader tension in the AI sector, where companies are racing to secure the computational resources needed for increasingly sophisticated AI models while attempting to build sustainable business models.

The concentration of massive data centers in specific regions also raises questions about power grid capacity, environmental impacts, and economic benefits for local communities that will host these energy-intensive facilities for decades to come.
