Three Bob Ross Paintings Fetch Over $600,000 at Charity Auction

Three paintings by beloved public television icon Bob Ross sold for more than $600,000 at auction on Tuesday in Los Angeles, far exceeding pre-sale estimates in a strong showing of the artist’s enduring popularity and cultural impact.

A serene snow vista titled “Winter’s Peace,” which Ross painted entirely during a 1993 episode of his iconic show “The Joy of Painting,” commanded the highest price at $318,000. Another 1993 work, “Home in the Valley,” depicting a lush green landscape, sold for $229,100, while “Cliffside” rounded out the trio at $114,800.

The final prices, which include the buyer’s premium charged by auction house Bonhams, vastly surpassed pre-auction estimates that topped out around $50,000 per painting. The identities of the buyers were not immediately disclosed.

“For a good cause — and you get the painting,” auctioneer Aaron Bastian reminded bidders during a momentary lull, invoking Ross’s famous philosophy: “Bob would remind you that this is your world, and you can do anything you want.”

These three works represent just the beginning of a larger initiative. The auction marks the first installment of 30 Ross paintings being sold to benefit public television stations struggling from significant cuts to federal funding. Three more paintings are scheduled for auction at Bonhams in Marlborough, Massachusetts, on January 27, with additional works to follow in New York and London.

All proceeds will support stations that utilize content from distributor American Public Television. The timing is particularly critical following Congress’s elimination of $1.1 billion previously allocated to public broadcasting, impacting approximately 330 PBS and 246 NPR stations nationwide. Small and rural stations face especially dire circumstances in the wake of these cuts.

“These stations have been the gateway for generations of viewers to discover not just Bob’s gentle teaching, but the transformative power of the arts,” said Joan Kowalski, president of Bob Ross Inc., in a statement underscoring the significance of the fundraising effort.

Ross, who passed away in 1995 at age 52 from complications of cancer, has experienced a remarkable posthumous resurgence in popularity. The former Air Force drill sergeant transformed himself into a cultural icon through his soothing demeanor on “The Joy of Painting,” which ran for 11 years. His gentle voice and encouraging words about “happy little clouds” and “happy accidents” created a therapeutic atmosphere that resonated deeply with viewers.

This connection only strengthened decades after his death, with Ross experiencing a dramatic surge in viewership during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns as people sought comfort and creative outlets while confined at home. Social media has further amplified his appeal to younger generations who appreciate his calming presence and no-pressure approach to creativity.

The art market has increasingly recognized Ross’s cultural significance, with his works—once considered primarily instructional—now commanding serious attention from collectors. These auction results reflect both the charitable nature of the sales and the growing recognition of Ross as an important American cultural figure whose influence extends far beyond his television programs.

For public television stations facing uncertain financial futures, the successful auction represents a meaningful boost and underscores the enduring value of programming that combines education, art, and accessibility—principles that Ross championed throughout his career.
