Tunisian Authorities Detain Pro-Palestinian Activists Ahead of Gaza Aid Flotilla

Tunisian authorities have detained several pro-Palestinian activists as tensions escalate around an international campaign preparing to send a humanitarian flotilla to Gaza, according to organizers.

The National Guard financial crimes unit has opened an investigation into alleged money laundering, fraud, and misuse of donation funds collected for the flotilla campaign, Tunisian media reported. The probe targets multiple managers and steering committee members, with several taken into custody while authorities verify the origin and management of donation funds.

Among those detained were Wael Naouar, Jawaher Channa, and Nabil Channoufi, all members of the Global Sumud Flotilla steering committee and its Tunisian organizing body. Tunisian officials have not yet publicly commented on the arrests.

Campaign organizers have condemned the detentions, describing them as targeted actions against activists supporting the Palestinian cause, and called for their immediate release.

The arrests follow a series of disruptions to flotilla-related events in Tunis in recent days. On Thursday, authorities banned a planned event that was expected to feature international activists, including Brazilian campaigner Thiago Ávila, Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, and Palestinian organizer Seif Abu Koshk.

Ávila was reportedly detained at Brussels Airport on Friday while traveling from Tunis to Amsterdam for a meeting of the Hague Group, which focuses on legal and diplomatic measures supporting international law.

Earlier in the week, security forces prevented a ceremony at the Tunisian port of Sidi Bou Said intended to honor port workers who had supported a previous flotilla mission last year.

The new humanitarian flotilla aims to challenge Israeli maritime restrictions on Gaza and deliver aid to the enclave’s more than 2 million residents, who continue to face severe humanitarian challenges despite a fragile ceasefire in place since October. According to organizers, more than 1,000 activists, including medical professionals, war crimes investigators, and engineers, plan to participate in the sea mission. The maritime effort will be supported by a land convoy expected to attract thousands more participants.

The flotilla’s vessels are planned to depart from multiple Mediterranean locations, including Spain, Tunisia, and Italy. Similar efforts last year resulted in Israel intercepting boats and detaining activists attempting to reach Gaza.

Despite the ceasefire agreement, humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza remains severely constrained. The United Nations has reported that hundreds of thousands of pallets of humanitarian supplies have accumulated at various crossings into Gaza, but distribution challenges persist. Israel has suspended more than two dozen humanitarian organizations from operating in the Gaza Strip for alleged non-compliance with new registration requirements.

Tunisia has historically maintained strong support for the Palestinian cause, and the crackdown on flotilla organizers marks a significant development in how the North African nation is handling pro-Palestinian activism. The country, which experienced political upheaval following its 2011 revolution, has seen increasing restrictions on civil society organizations in recent years.

The timing of these detentions is particularly notable as the flotilla steering committee had also called for a protest in Tunis on Saturday night in support of Iran following joint strikes by the United States and Israel, potentially indicating broader geopolitical considerations in the Tunisian authorities’ actions.

International aid organizations continue to warn about catastrophic humanitarian conditions in Gaza, with severe shortages of food, medicine, clean water, and shelter materials. The planned flotilla represents one of several international civil society initiatives attempting to bring attention to the ongoing crisis and deliver much-needed supplies to Gaza’s civilian population.
