Turkish authorities have moved swiftly to counter what they describe as a wave of disinformation targeting the relationship between Türkiye and Azerbaijan, amid rising regional tensions in the Middle East.

The country’s official anti-disinformation agency issued a statement over the weekend on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal, warning citizens about “exaggerated rhetoric, disinformation, and propaganda” that allegedly aims to undermine ties between the two nations.

“Closely bound by unshakable historical ties and shared values, Türkiye and Azerbaijan have not only today, but also in the past, successfully overcome the many challenges they faced,” the statement emphasized.

The agency highlighted that bilateral relations continue to thrive under the leadership of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, reinforcing the longstanding motto that characterizes their partnership: “One Nation, Two States.”

This diplomatic reaffirmation comes amid broader concerns about regional stability. Burhanettin Duran, communications director for the Turkish presidency, revealed on Saturday that authorities had detected an increase in online disinformation connected to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.

Since hostilities escalated late last month, Turkish officials have taken action against numerous social media accounts spreading unverified information. Duran confirmed that 41 accounts had been blocked and dozens of posts removed across multiple platforms, primarily X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram.

“These accounts deliberately shared unverified content with the aim of sowing confusion and panic among the public,” Duran told reporters, adding that authorities are actively combating “digital manipulation attempts targeting public order, social peace, and national security.”

The relationship between Türkiye and Azerbaijan holds significant strategic importance in the region. The two Turkic states maintain close cultural, linguistic, and economic ties, with cooperation extending across energy, defense, and trade sectors. Their partnership gained particular prominence during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, when Türkiye provided strong diplomatic and military support to Azerbaijan.

This latest disinformation concern emerges as the broader Middle East faces escalating tensions. The conflict between Israel and Iran has created a volatile situation that regional powers like Türkiye are carefully navigating. As a NATO member with significant influence in the region, Türkiye’s positioning and relationships with neighboring countries take on heightened importance during such crises.

Digital disinformation has become an increasing focus for the Turkish government in recent years. The country established its anti-disinformation agency to monitor and respond to what it considers false information circulating online, particularly during periods of crisis or tension.

Critics of the government have sometimes questioned the implementation of anti-disinformation measures, suggesting they could potentially restrict legitimate speech. However, authorities maintain that their efforts are focused specifically on content that threatens national security or public order.

The agency has repeatedly urged citizens to exercise caution when consuming news and information online, advising them to rely exclusively on “official statements issued by competent authorities” rather than unverified claims circulating on social media platforms.

As regional tensions continue, Turkish authorities appear determined to maintain both domestic stability and key international relationships by aggressively countering what they view as harmful disinformation campaigns.
