X Introduces Country-of-Origin Labels to Combat Misinformation

X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, has launched a new transparency feature designed to help users identify potential misinformation sources and suspicious accounts. The “About this account” tool provides crucial background information on user profiles, marking a significant step in the platform’s efforts to combat deception online.

The new feature displays when accounts were created, their geographic location, how they joined the platform, and tracks username changes—all vital indicators that can help users distinguish authentic profiles from potential impersonators, bots, or AI-generated accounts.

According to India Today, X has implemented this tool as concerns grow about increasingly sophisticated deceptive accounts that closely mimic real users. The platform now reveals whether accounts were established through the App Store or Google Play, providing additional verification points that could expose profiles attempting to spread misinformation.

Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, first previewed the feature on his own profile back in October. At that time, he explained that the tool aims to give users enough contextual information to make informed judgments about account authenticity. Bier specifically noted that inconsistencies between claimed locations and actual account activity patterns could serve as red flags for suspicious behavior.

“We want to provide users with the tools to make their own determinations about who they’re interacting with,” a company spokesperson explained. “Transparency is crucial in today’s social media landscape where misinformation can spread rapidly.”

The feature’s rollout has accelerated over the past week, with more users reporting access to their own account metadata. Bier had recently promised enhanced transparency tools within 72 hours following user requests, and the platform appears to be delivering on that commitment.

Users can access the new feature by selecting the “Joined” date displayed on profiles, which opens a detailed panel showing the account’s metadata. This information is particularly valuable for identifying accounts that may have been repurposed or rebranded—a common tactic used by those seeking to mislead others or capitalize on established follower counts.

Social media experts view this development as a positive step in the ongoing battle against online deception. “These kinds of transparency tools are increasingly necessary as the line between authentic and inauthentic content blurs,” said Maya Richardson, digital policy analyst at the Center for Information Integrity. “Platforms have a responsibility to provide users with the means to make informed decisions about the content they consume.”

The implementation is still in its early stages. TechCrunch reports that while many users can now view their own metadata, the information isn’t yet consistently visible when examining other profiles. This phased approach appears intentional, giving account holders an opportunity to verify their own information before it becomes widely accessible to others.

X has emphasized that user privacy remains a priority within this new transparency framework. The platform allows individuals to customize their privacy settings, including the option to display either their precise country or a broader regional location. This flexibility aims to balance the competing needs for transparency and personal safety as the feature expands across the platform’s estimated 350 million global users.

The move comes amid broader industry efforts to combat misinformation and enhance user trust. Other major platforms have implemented similar verification and transparency measures in recent years, though X’s approach provides some of the most detailed account history information available on mainstream social media.
