Fact-Check Roundup: Election Misinformation and Viral Falsehoods Dominate Social Media

Misinformation surrounding recent Assembly elections and high-profile political figures has proliferated across social media platforms, according to a series of fact-checks conducted this week. The surge in false claims highlights growing concerns about the spread of manipulated content during politically sensitive periods.

Recent Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal have become particular hotbeds for misleading content. As voting commenced in West Bengal on April 23, social media users widely circulated a video allegedly showing police personnel attacking workers from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) who were campaigning near polling stations. Fact-checkers at Newschecker determined the footage was being shared with false context, having originated from an unrelated incident.

In a similar pattern, another viral video claimed to show Indian Army personnel physically confronting TMC supporters who were allegedly attempting to capture polling booths during the first phase of voting. Investigation revealed this claim was entirely fabricated, with the footage being repurposed from a different event with no connection to the current elections.

The spread of electoral misinformation extended to Tamil Nadu as well, where Assembly polls have also been underway. A particularly damaging piece of fake news involved a video supposedly showing “massive stacks of cash” seized from a warehouse belonging to a friend of DMK leader and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin. Fact-checkers conclusively determined the video had no connection to Stalin or the Tamil Nadu elections, despite its widespread circulation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also targeted in the wave of misinformation. A video purporting to show the Prime Minister receiving a facial massage quickly gained traction across platforms. The footage, which would have represented an unusual moment of vulnerability for the typically carefully-managed public image of the Prime Minister, was revealed to be completely misattributed, featuring someone else entirely.

Beyond domestic politics, international relations have also been subject to manipulation. A doctored video circulating widely claimed to show Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan making controversial statements about U.S.-Israel relations. The fabricated clip portrayed General Chauhan describing American leaders as “toothless rulers” and claiming that former U.S. President Donald Trump “cannot disobey” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Verification efforts confirmed the video had been deceptively edited to create this false narrative.

The prevalence of such misinformation presents significant challenges during election periods, when public perception can be particularly vulnerable to manipulation. Social media platforms continue to struggle with the volume and sophistication of false content, despite increased scrutiny and moderation efforts.

Media literacy experts warn that the targeted nature of these false claims—focusing on prominent political figures and sensitive electoral processes—suggests a deliberate attempt to influence public opinion and potentially undermine democratic processes.

As India’s election season continues, fact-checking organizations are urging citizens to verify information from multiple credible sources before sharing content online. The pattern of misinformation observed in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal may serve as a warning for upcoming electoral contests in other states, highlighting the need for heightened vigilance against digital manipulation.

For voters seeking reliable information, independent verification from established news outlets and official electoral bodies remains crucial for navigating the increasingly complex information landscape surrounding Indian politics.
