False Images Flood Social Media After US Capture of Venezuela’s Maduro

In the wake of the dramatic US special forces raid that captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores on January 3, 2026, social media platforms have been inundated with misleading and fabricated images purporting to show the operation or Venezuelan public reaction.

The overnight extraction of Venezuela’s authoritarian leader from Caracas amid intense bombing has triggered a flood of misinformation as global audiences seek visual confirmation of the historic event. Many widely shared images, including an apparent photo of Maduro surrounded by US soldiers, were determined to be AI-generated fakes.

Maduro and Flores subsequently appeared in a New York courthouse on January 5, where they pleaded not guilty to narco-terrorism charges. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will temporarily “run” the oil-rich South American nation during a transition period.

The military action has sparked international alarm, with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calling for “respect for the principles of sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity” during an emergency Security Council meeting.

AI-Generated Capture Photo Spreads Widely

One of the most widely circulated images allegedly showed Maduro in US military custody. The photo, which appeared across X, Facebook, and other platforms, portrayed a younger-looking Maduro with darker hair surrounded by soldiers.

Analysis revealed telltale signs of artificial intelligence generation. Google reverse image searches identified the image as “made with Google AI,” and Google’s Gemini tool detected a SynthID watermark—an invisible marker embedded by Google to identify AI-generated content.

In contrast, Trump published an authentic photo on his Truth Social platform showing Maduro blindfolded and wearing a jumpsuit aboard the USS Iwo Jima battleship.

Israeli Bombing Footage Misrepresented

Another piece of misinformation involved video footage claimed to show the US military operation against Venezuela. This video, which depicted nighttime bombing and was shared across social media platforms, was actually recorded months earlier in a completely different region.

Reverse image searches revealed the footage had been shared as early as October 1, 2024, with accurate descriptions identifying it as an Iranian attack on Israel. A Bellingcat researcher geolocated the video to an area south of Israel’s Nevatim Airbase at the time Iran launched approximately 200 missiles at Israel in retaliation for the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Chilean Celebrations Falsely Labeled as Venezuelan

Social media posts also circulated footage of street celebrations purportedly showing Venezuelans celebrating Maduro’s capture in Caracas. However, AFP fact-checkers geolocated the video to Santiago, Chile—specifically Avenida Alameda Libertador Bernardo O’Higgins in the city’s Estación Central area.

While the celebrations were genuine, they took place in Chile, home to a large Venezuelan migrant community, rather than in Venezuela itself. Similar celebrations did occur in other countries with Venezuelan diaspora populations, alongside some protests against the US intervention, including a gathering of approximately 2,000 Maduro supporters in Caracas.

Older Statue Toppling Footage Recycled

Conservative commentator David Harris Jr and others shared video of Venezuelans toppling a statue of former president Hugo Chávez, claiming it occurred after the US raid. Chávez, who governed Venezuela from 1999 until his death from cancer in 2013, had personally selected Maduro as his successor.

However, the statue toppling footage was actually captured on July 29, 2024, during protests following Venezuela’s disputed election. Demonstrators knocked down multiple Chávez statues in cities across Venezuela at that time, rejecting Maduro’s contested claim of electoral victory.

The spread of misinformation surrounding such a significant geopolitical development highlights the challenges of verifying information in real-time during major international events, particularly as artificial intelligence makes the creation of convincing fake imagery increasingly accessible.
