Social Media Flooded with Misinformation Following US Capture of Venezuelan Leader

In the aftermath of U.S. special forces’ overnight raid to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores on January 3, 2026, social media platforms have been inundated with false images and videos purporting to document the operation and its aftermath.

The misrepresented content began circulating rapidly after American forces swooped into Caracas to extract the authoritarian left-wing leader and his wife amid an intense bombing campaign. The operation marks an extraordinary development in U.S.-Venezuela relations and has triggered international alarm.

Maduro and Flores have since pleaded not guilty to narco-terrorism charges in a New York courthouse on January 5. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States will temporarily “run” the oil-rich South American nation as it oversees a political transition.

The international community has responded with concern. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged respect for “sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity” during an emergency Security Council meeting called to address the situation.

AI-Generated Capture Photo Circulates Widely

Among the most widely shared pieces of misinformation was an AI-generated image claiming to show Maduro in U.S. military custody. The fabricated photo, which appeared across X, Facebook and other platforms, depicted a younger-looking Maduro with darker hair surrounded by American soldiers.

Reverse image searches revealed that Google’s AI systems had created the image. Google’s Gemini tool detected a SynthID watermark—an invisible marker the company uses to identify AI-generated content—embedded in the photograph.

In contrast, President Trump published an authentic photo on his Truth Social platform showing Maduro in a jumpsuit, blindfolded aboard the USS Iwo Jima, the U.S. battleship where he was initially detained after capture.

Middle East Conflict Footage Misrepresented as Venezuela Operation

Social media users also circulated video footage claiming to show the U.S. bombing operation against Venezuela. However, reverse image searches revealed that the video actually depicted an Iranian missile attack on Israel from October 1, 2024.

Researchers from Bellingcat geolocated the footage to an area south of Israel’s Nevatim Airbase. The missile barrage was part of Iran’s response to Israel’s killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah the previous week, during which Iran fired approximately 200 missiles at Israeli targets.

Chilean Celebrations Misidentified as Venezuelan Reaction

Another piece of misinformation involved footage of street celebrations being falsely described as showing Venezuelans in Caracas celebrating Maduro’s capture.

AFP fact-checkers geolocated the video to Santiago, Chile’s Avenida Alameda Libertador Bernardo O’Higgins in the Estación Central neighborhood—not Caracas. Chile is home to a significant Venezuelan migrant community, many of whom gathered to celebrate Maduro’s ouster.

Similar celebrations occurred in several countries around the world with large Venezuelan expatriate communities. However, some protests against the U.S. military intervention also took place, including one gathering of approximately 2,000 Maduro supporters in Caracas.

Old Statue Toppling Video Resurfaces

Conservative commentator David Harris Jr. and others shared a video purportedly showing Venezuelans toppling a statue of former president Hugo Chávez after the U.S. operation. Chávez, who governed from 1999 until his death from cancer in 2013, had personally selected Maduro as his successor.

However, fact-checkers determined the footage was actually captured on July 29, 2024, during protests in the Venezuelan city of Calabozo. These demonstrations occurred in the wake of Venezuela’s disputed July 28 election, in which Maduro claimed victory amid widespread allegations of fraud. Multiple statues were toppled during these protests as citizens rejected the official election results.

The spread of misinformation surrounding the U.S. operation highlights the challenges of verifying information during fast-moving international events, particularly those involving military action and regime change. As the situation in Venezuela continues to evolve, media literacy experts encourage careful verification of sources and images before sharing content related to the developing crisis.
