Ubisoft Dismisses Altered Assassin’s Creed Invictus Screenshot as “Misinformation”

Ubisoft has publicly refuted the authenticity of a supposedly leaked screenshot from its upcoming multiplayer title Assassin’s Creed Invictus, calling the image “heavily altered” and likely manipulated with AI technology.

The controversy began earlier this week when a well-known Assassin’s Creed leaker who goes by the handle j0nathan shared what appeared to be a screenshot from the in-development multiplayer project. The official Assassin’s Creed social media account quickly responded to the post, stating: “Nice try… This might have started as an image from our private test, but it’s been heavily altered (most probably with AI). Not great to spread misinformation.”

The publisher added that official information about Codename Invictus would be revealed “when the time is right,” suggesting the project remains actively in development despite limited public information.

Invictus represents Ubisoft’s latest attempt to bring multiplayer back to the Assassin’s Creed franchise. The project is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal with significant input from veterans of the company’s successful multiplayer combat game For Honor. According to previous reports from j0nathan dating back nearly two years, Invictus draws inspiration from the party game Fall Guys and is designed to support up to 16 players in PvP competition.

This isn’t the first multiplayer Assassin’s Creed project to make headlines this year. Earlier in 2024, reports emerged that Ubisoft Annecy had canceled another multiplayer title codenamed League. That project allegedly began as downloadable content for Assassin’s Creed Shadows before evolving into a standalone game before its reported cancellation.

The Assassin’s Creed franchise has undergone significant organizational changes in recent months. Following a broader corporate restructuring at Ubisoft, the series now falls under the purview of Vantage Studios, a specialized subsidiary that also oversees other major Ubisoft franchises including Far Cry and Rainbow Six. This centralized management approach aims to create more cohesive development strategies across Ubisoft’s key intellectual properties.

While Invictus continues development behind closed doors, Assassin’s Creed fans can look forward to the imminent release of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced on July 9. This comprehensive remake of the pirate-themed 2013 adventure has been completely rebuilt in Ubisoft’s Anvil engine and will launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S platforms. The publisher has indicated no current plans to bring the title to Nintendo’s forthcoming Switch 2 console.

In an unexpected expansion of the franchise beyond gaming, Ubisoft is also preparing an original Assassin’s Creed stage production called Heredis, scheduled to premiere in Montreal this December. The live performance represents the company’s latest effort to expand the historical fiction franchise into new entertainment mediums.

The Invictus leak controversy highlights the ongoing challenge game publishers face in controlling information about unannounced projects in an era where AI manipulation tools make it increasingly difficult to distinguish authentic materials from sophisticated fakes. For Ubisoft, a company that has struggled with premature leaks of its projects in recent years, addressing such incidents promptly has become an important part of managing public expectations and maintaining development timelines.
