In a sharp rebuttal to ongoing allegations, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) board member and BJP leader G. Bhanuprakash Reddy has accused the YSR Congress Party of deliberately misrepresenting an isolated theft attempt at the revered Tirumala temple to create unwarranted concern among devotees.

During a press conference in Tirupati on Wednesday, Reddy clarified that the incident being highlighted by opposition leaders actually occurred approximately 11 months ago and involved a significantly smaller theft attempt than what is being portrayed in recent political rhetoric.

“What the YSRC is presenting as a major gold heist worth crores of rupees was actually an isolated incident from January last year, where an outsourcing employee attempted to steal a single gold biscuit weighing about 100 grams,” Reddy explained.

According to Reddy, the temple’s security systems functioned effectively during the incident. TTD vigilance and security personnel detected the theft attempt immediately and apprehended the employee on the spot. The accused was promptly handed over to local police authorities and subsequently placed in judicial custody.

The Parakamani section, which has become the center of this controversy, is a critical area within the Tirumala temple complex where offerings made by devotees in the hundi (donation box) are counted, sorted, and processed. Given the sacred nature of these offerings and the substantial value of gold and other precious items donated daily, security protocols in this section are particularly stringent.

The TTD, which administers the Lord Venkateswara temple at Tirumala, is one of the richest and most visited religious institutions in the world. The temple receives offerings worth several crores of rupees daily, making the integrity of its treasury management systems a matter of significant public interest.

Reddy emphasized that the temple administration responded appropriately to the incident, documenting the case thoroughly and submitting all evidence to the court. “The entire matter was handled with transparency and in accordance with established protocols,” he stated.

The BJP leader accused the opposition party of deliberately distorting facts to undermine public confidence in the TTD and the current state government. “By repeatedly raising this resolved issue and mischaracterizing its scale, YSRC leaders are attempting to create unnecessary doubt and confusion among the millions of devotees who place their faith in the Lord and the temple administration,” Reddy said.

This political controversy emerges against the backdrop of Andhra Pradesh’s deeply intertwined religious and political landscape, where the administration of prominent temples often becomes a contested political issue. The TTD, with its enormous financial resources and cultural significance, frequently finds itself at the center of political debates in the state.

Temple officials have previously issued clarifications regarding the security measures in place at the Parakamani section, emphasizing that multiple layers of surveillance and accountability mechanisms exist to protect devotees’ offerings.

The TTD has maintained that reports of large-scale gold theft from the Parakamani section are unfounded and that the isolated incident from January 2023 was swiftly addressed through appropriate security and legal channels.

This dispute highlights the sensitive intersection of religion, politics, and institutional governance in Andhra Pradesh, where allegations concerning temple administration can quickly escalate into major political flashpoints given the emotional connection millions of devotees have with the Tirumala shrine.

As the political rhetoric continues, temple authorities have urged devotees to maintain their trust in the established security systems that safeguard the offerings made to Lord Venkateswara.
