Journalists Key to Maintaining Social Harmony Amid Rising Misinformation, Says Tripura CM

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has emphasized that journalists bear significant responsibility for maintaining political, social, and cultural harmony in society, calling them the “mirror of society” during National Press Day celebrations on Sunday in Agartala.

Speaking at an event held at the Sukanta Academy auditorium, Saha highlighted journalism as more than just a profession, describing accurate news dissemination as “an art” that should be pursued with a deep sense of duty toward society. This year’s National Press Day theme, “Safeguarding Press Credibility Amidst Rising Misinformation,” reflected growing concerns about information integrity in the digital age.

“Freedom of speech and expression is the lifeblood of the media,” Saha said, while cautioning that journalists must remain vigilant and responsible in their reporting. As the holder of the Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA) portfolio in addition to his role as Chief Minister, Saha underscored how crucial newspapers and journalists are in strengthening democratic institutions.

The proliferation of misinformation on social media platforms presents an escalating challenge that requires collaboration among all stakeholders, according to the Chief Minister. He expressed pride in local journalism, stating, “Journalists of Tripura are in no way inferior in quality compared to journalists from other states.”

In a push to elevate journalism standards further, Saha called on veteran journalists to conduct monthly workshops for younger media professionals. These sessions would help emerging journalists enhance their skills and reinforce ethical journalism practices that are increasingly important in today’s media landscape.

The Chief Minister also addressed serious concerns about journalist safety, referencing the murders of two journalists in Tripura. He assured attendees that his administration continues to pursue justice in these cases and remains committed to ensuring the safety and dignity of all media professionals working in the state.

As part of this commitment, Saha revealed that various committees have been established by the ICA Department focused on journalist welfare. He promised that recommendations from these committees would be implemented in phases, signaling ongoing support for the press community.

The state-level celebration, organized by the ICA Department, was attended by prominent media figures including Agartala Press Club President Pranab Sarkar, Executive Editor Manas Pal, and Editor Sanit Debroy. Government officials present included ICA Secretary Pradeep Kumar Chakraborty and ICA Director Bimbisar Bhattacharjee.

The event also honored two senior journalists, Pranamay Saha and Anupam Bhattacharjee, who were felicitated with shawls, mementos, and honorariums in recognition of their contributions to journalism in Tripura.

The Chief Minister’s comments come at a critical juncture for journalism worldwide, as traditional media outlets face unprecedented challenges from digital platforms and the rapid spread of unverified information. According to recent industry research, trust in news media has declined globally, making the focus on credibility and responsible reporting increasingly vital.

Media experts note that local journalists in states like Tripura face unique challenges, including limited resources and sometimes dangerous working conditions, making government support and recognition particularly meaningful. The emphasis on professional development through mentorship programs could help address skill gaps while reinforcing ethical standards.

As Tripura continues to develop its media landscape, the government’s acknowledgment of journalists’ role in maintaining social harmony reflects the broader understanding that a healthy democracy requires a robust, responsible press operating with both freedom and accountability.
