The Election Commission of Malaysia and TikTok have formed a strategic partnership for the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election, launching a collaborative effort to combat misinformation and ensure voters have access to reliable information throughout the electoral process.
The initiative, announced this week, will leverage TikTok’s widespread popularity in Malaysia to direct users to authoritative election resources through an in-app search guide. This feature will connect users directly to the Election Commission’s official website, where they can access verified information about voter registration, polling procedures, and participation guidelines.
“Elections are important moments that spark active conversations amongst the community. During these civic processes, we remain focused on keeping our users safe and protecting the integrity of the TikTok platform,” said Firdaus Fadzil, Head of Public Policy for TikTok Malaysia.
The partnership comes at a critical time for Sabah, which has historically seen intense political competition. The eastern Malaysian state, known for its complex political landscape and diverse population, faces unique electoral challenges that make accurate information particularly important for voters.
Throughout the election period, TikTok will work closely with the Election Commission and fact-checking partners to increase the visibility of official information. The platform will deploy advanced content moderation technologies alongside human review teams to identify and remove misleading or harmful election-related content.
The Election Commission’s Chairman, Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun, emphasized the importance of this collaboration in maintaining electoral integrity. “The EC strives to ensure that there are no elements that could create negative perceptions, doubts, or mistrust across social media platforms. Collaborating with TikTok is a key step to ensure that voters have access to authentic and timely information,” he stated.
Social media platforms have increasingly become battlegrounds for political influence in Malaysia, with misinformation campaigns affecting previous elections. TikTok’s growing user base in the country, particularly among younger Malaysians, makes it an essential platform for election-related communication.
The partnership extends beyond just TikTok and the Election Commission, with civil society organizations and election watchdogs like BERSIH also being engaged. This multi-stakeholder approach aims to ensure TikTok’s policies remain responsive to emerging challenges related to election integrity and evolving tactics in online misinformation.
In a notable policy stance, TikTok has reaffirmed its prohibition on political advertising on the platform. Politicians, government entities, and political parties will not be permitted to monetize or promote election-related content. The platform will only allow official election authorities to run limited advertisements containing essential voter information, such as registration procedures or voting instructions.
Digital rights experts have noted that such partnerships between tech platforms and election authorities are becoming increasingly common globally as countries grapple with the impact of social media on democratic processes. Malaysia’s approach with TikTok could serve as a model for addressing these challenges in Southeast Asia’s diverse political landscape.
The platform has also empowered users to participate in maintaining election integrity by encouraging the reporting of misleading or false information through its in-app reporting tool. These reports enable TikTok to take swift enforcement actions against content that violates its community guidelines.
As Malaysia continues to navigate the complex relationship between social media and democratic participation, this partnership represents a significant step toward ensuring that digital platforms enhance rather than undermine the electoral process in Sabah and potentially in future elections nationwide.
